Effa Louise Manley was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1897 to John and Bertha.  She graduated from Penn Central High School.  After graduation is worked in the hat making business.  She married Abe in 1935 after meeting him at a New York Yankees game.  Abe owned and operated the Newark Eagles in Newark, New Jersey.She took over the day-to-day operation of the team, arranged playing schedules, planned the team’s travel, managed and me the payroll, bought equipment, negotiated contracts and handled publicity and promotions.  By the spring of 1981 her health had deteriorated to the point that she could no longer live in her apartment. Robert Machemer was born in Münster, Germany back in 1933.  His father died in Ukraine in 1942.  Robert worked for six months in a steel mill to partially finance his medical school education.  He studied medicine at the University of Münster, where he received his MD.  He continued his education at the University of Freiburg where he received is Promotierung in 1959.From 1962-66 he was an assistant in the University Eye Clinic at Göttingen.  In 1966, he received a two-year NATO fellowship and moved to Miami to work at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute until 1978.  In 1978, he became the chair of Duke University Medical School’s Department of Ophthalmology serving in that capacity until 1991 and his retirement as professor emeritus in 1998.  He died in 2009, he was 76.What you may not kno... 09/06/2021

Lyman Hall was born in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1724 to John and Mary.  He graduated from Yale College in 1747.  In 1749, he was called to the pulpit of Stratfield Parish (now Bridgeport).  His pastorate was a stormy one, which he was dismissed in 1751.  In 1751, he moved to South Carolina establishing him as a physician at Dorchester, South Carolina.He moved again to Liberty County Georgia where he soon became one of the leading citizens of the newly founded town of Sunbury.  He was chosen to be a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, admitted to a seat in Congress in 1775.  In 1779, Sunbury was burned by the British.  He did not return until 1782, settling in Savannah.  In 1783, he was elected the governor of the state.  During his term he pushed for a state university, beli... 08/15/2021

William John Little was born in Whitechapel, London, England back in 1810 to John and Hannah.  He suffered from polio, partial paralysis, and severe club foot. As a youth he was an apothecary’s apprentice, surrendering his indentures at the age of 18 he entered medical school at the London Hospital.In 1832, he was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons.  He is known for his doctoral dissertation on tenotomy (the surgical cutting of a tendon) for the treatment of club foot.  He travelled to Germany to study the technique of subcutaneous tenotomy with Louis Stromeyer, who subsequently corrected Little’s deformed foot by this method.  The techniques originated by Stromeyer and applied by Little are still used today in the surgical management of quite a few neuromuscular conditions.  He ... 07/08/2021

James Everett Livingston was born in Towns, Georgia back in 1940. He graduated from Lumber High School in 1957.  He entered the North Georgia College in 1957 but transferred to pursue a major that the school did not offer.  He graduated in 1962, with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Auburn University.  Later that same year he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.In 1966, he was promoted to captain serving as the Commanding Officer of the Marine detachment aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp.  In 1967, he was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam.  He served this Republic for over 33 years before retiring in 1995.What you may not know about retired United States Marine major general James E. Richard Lindon was born in Clifton-upon-Dunsmore back in 1816.  I could not find out any information about his parents, upbringing or much of anything else, but what I did find out I hope you’ll enjoy.  His profession was an English leatherworker. Charles W. Lindberg was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota back in 1920.  Shortly after the Japanese Navy attack on Pearl Harbor he joined the United States Marine Corps.  After basic training he volunteered for the Marine Raiders.  He saw combat on Guadalcanal and Bougainville.In 1944, his unit was disbanded and he returned to Camp Pendleton, California for more training.  He was assigned as a flamethrower operator, assigned to the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division.  On 19, February 1945, he landed with the fifth assault wave on Iwo Jima. Willard Frank Libby was born in Grand Valley, Colorado back in 1908 to Ora and Eva.  When he was five the family moved to Santa Rosa, California where he graduated from Analy High School in 1926.  He continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley receiving his B.S. in 1931 and his Ph.D. in 1933.On December 8, 1941 he volunteered his services to Harold Urey, he travelled to Columbia University to work on the Manhattan Project.  After the war he accepted an offer from the University of Chicago to work in the Chemistry Department at the new Institute for Nuclear Studies.  In 1972, he started the first Environmental Engineering program at UCLA where he stayed until his retirement in 1976, he died in 1980, he was 71.What you may not know about Willard is that he is noted f... 05/31/2021

Robert John Lechmere Guppy was born in San Fernando, Trinidad back in 1836 to Robert and Amelia.  He was raised by his grandparents, Richard Parkinson and Lucy.  His grandfather wanted him to take over the castle, a role in which he had no interest.  He came into an inheritance from other relatives.He left England at 18 and visited Australia, Tasmania before being shipwrecked on the coast of New Zealand in 1856 for two years.  Later he became Trinidad’s Chief Inspector of Schools until his retirement in 1891. Francis Laux Jr. was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma back in 1897. He was heavily involved in sports. He won 16 letters in baseball, basketball and football in Oklahoma City and the Bristow schools before entering Oklahoma City College.  during World War I he served in the United States Army Air Service.  After the war he took odd jobs managing a semi-pro baseball team in Guthrie, also he worked as an insurance and real estate broker in Bristow, refereeing college football games.  In 1927, he began broadcasting Oklahoma and Oklahoma A&M football games. Yau Leong Fong was born in Honolulu on this island of Oahu.  He graduated from the McKinley High School in 1924.  In 1930, he obtained a degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  Continuing his education, he went to Harvard Law School where he received his law degree in 1935.After graduation, he returned to Honolulu working at the Prosecuting Attorney Office in Honolulu.  In 1938, he founded the law firm of Fong, Miho, Choy and Robinson.  In 1942, he changed his name to Hiram.  During WWII he served as a major in the United States Army Air Forces and as a Judge Advocate.  Later he retired from the United States Air Force Reserve as a colonel.  He died in 2004, he was 97.What you may not know about Hiram is that he was the first Asian-American United States Senator serving from 195... 03/18/2021

Semyon Nikolaevich Korsakov was born in Kherson, Ukraine (what was part of the Russina Empire) back in 1787.  I don’t anything about his early childhood, but wait for the ending on this one.  Anyway, from 1812-14 he took part in the Napoleonic Wars with the Russian Army.  He later served as an official in the statistics department of the Russian Police Ministry in St. Petersburg.  He received the Order of St. Anna and the Order of St. Vladimir.  Although not trained as a doctor he treater several thousand patients using conventional medicine before switching to homeopathy in 1829.  He died in 1853, he was 65.What you may not know about Semyon is that he was also an inventor.  He invented the “linear homeoscope with movable parts” and other variations of the device in 1832. Kong Tai Heong was bornin Waichow, Guangdong, Qing China back in 1875.  She was abandoned as an infant on the steps of the Berlin Foundling House in Hong Kong.  The orphanage was run by German nuns.  They helped her apply to the Canton Medical School to study western medicine.She met and married Li, over her parent’s objections, the following day they boarded a ship for Honolulu.  The trip lasted 30 arriving in the Republic of Hawaii on July 4th 1896.  They were unable to work as physicians living in abject poverty working in a tobacco warehouse.  She died in 1951, she was 76.What you may not know about Kong is that after arriving in Hawaii with the blessing of Sanford B. Robert Knight was born in Old Warwick, Rhode Island back in 1826 to Stephen and Weltham.  The family moved to Cranston, Rhode Island where his father put him to work in the Cranston Print Works at the tender age of eight.  In 1845 he studied for a year and a half at Pawcatuck Academy in Westerly.  Afterwards, he taught school in Exeter for four months.In 1846, you could find him working for John Hopkins Clarke as a clerk in his factory store in Pontiac.  Clarke was elected to the U.S. Senate; Robert and a partner purchased the business becoming owners of the Pontiac Mills.  In 1852 Robert and his brother Benjamin formed the B.B. and R.
