All over America there are vestiges of factories that were the lifeblood of communities of all sizes. One of the most striking to me was the factory in Tallassee, Alabama. I believe it was textiles of some sort. The buildings take up the better part of the town situated by the river.   It is so easy to feel and hear the thrum that must have happened not only daily but around the clock when this factory was producing at its highest rate. Since it had been around since the early 1900s, generations must have worked there. More than likely whatever the product was, some bureaucrat somewhere decided the bottom line would be enhanced if these jobs were shipped overseas someplace. The devastation this little town must have felt as the breath was sucked out of the buildings is unimagineable a...

The bridge in Wetumpka, Alabama is one that I would enjoy getting to see on a daily basis. I'll bet it never looks the same twice. The river is the Coosa and when I was traveling there earlier in the spring I saw several signs showing that in the 1920s during heavy rains, the river rose 37 feet. I can't even begin to imagine the terrifying power that river has in those conditions.   If you ever travel to Montgomery, Alabama make sure you take the 20 minute ride to explore Wetumpka. Just outside the town is also the largest meteor crater in the U.S, more that 5 miles wide! Sadly, we didn't get a chance to see that. I'd probably still be there taking pictures!     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

During the recent road trip my mother and I took to Montgomery, Alabama, we decided to take a day and explore some of the small towns within 20 minutes of Montgomery. Like many southern small towns, Wetumpka, Alabama had once been a thriving factory town. While it's apparent that in many respects it still has a vibrant core to it and it was obvious that the local chamber of commerce, merchant associations and civic minded groups are working hard to show Wetumpka's finest attributes off to the world there were vestiges of its former heyday everywhere in the form of abandoned factory buildings and closed up storefronts.   The feeling in the town however was far from gloomy. With the exception of the ivy coated factory buildings, the rest of the town was well kept and attractive. The riv...

Apparently she has a routine and part of that routine includes me. I've just learned that when she's at home my mother gets up, checks the weather to see what she needs to wear for her bike ride. Temps under 60 degrees means a long underwear shirt and a sweat shirt in Port Charlotte. She rides her 3 wheel bike for 10-11 miles every morning and then returns home to get on the computer. She checks email, her banking stuff and reads my blog. So, as you know I've been on this road trip with my mother since last Thursday to go to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery, AL. She wonders why I haven't posted anything new to my blog since then.   Well, I have a routine too. It doesn't work so well on the road. Strange bed, strange food, time scheduled knocked to pieces. Not to worry th...

WHAT A WONDERFUL CITY MILLBROOK, AL HAS BECOME!!! So, as I ran at the park this morning...I began to realize what a truly WONDERFUL city Millbrook is to live in. As I circled the track time and time again, (4 exhausting miles to be exact) I noticed the smallest of details. Now, I must say, this was not my first time at this park...nor was it any different than the last year I have been faithfully running there. For some unknown reason, I was struck with an overwhelming sense of 'homeness' this morning. As I watched a mom and her son swing on the wooden playground overlooking the small running creek, I realized how peaceful this park really was. About that time, some rather condemned city employees (yes, the prisoners) showed up to do their regular maintenance work at the park. So, under...

Every July the City of Millbrook holds it's annual Summerfest as a way to thank it's citizens. Summerfest is a great evening out for the whole family. Offering music by local bands and food and drinks from local non-profits and civic groups. The festivities begin around 6:00 pm and end with an awesome fireworks display. Last years Summerfest offered moon bounces, a dunking booth and much more to entertain the kids. Everyone is invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets, snacks, drinks, etc for an evening of family fun. The admission is free and is hosted at The Pines Golf Course on Deatsville Hwy. Come on out and join us at Millbrook's Summerfest!

What follows is a local monthly market conditions report for Montgomery Alabama.  This particular report is for the month of May, 2008.  The market remains slow with buyers looking for the better deals. Market concern may be a factor for some buyers but investors are still in the market helping in the sale of some depressed homes.  Some builders holding vacant new homes are making great deals and in some cases offering properties for rent and lease purchase to assist their bottom line.  A number of homes are being sold on the foreclosure market and these range in price from 30k up to over 350k. Theses comments and statistics are updated every month with new comments being added by the 10th of the month.  Your input is solicited, please email your comments and suggestions to the editor a...
