It all started in the early 1920's as a few well to do families started making their way up the mountain building homes here and there over looking the valley. One of the first of these was a gentleman by the name of George Battey Ward, who bought about 20 acres on the crest. He built a home he named Vestavia as it was designed after the Temple of Vesta in Rome. He also added a garden gazebo, modeled after the Temple of Sibyl at Tivoli, across the road from his home. Upon his death in 1940,  Charles Byrd purchased the property. Byrd had begun some development and appropriately named the place Vestavia Hills in 1946.
