Sara Falligant | Opelika-Auburn News | Twitter Auburn University students looking for a quicker way around campus won’t have to look far starting this summer. By mid-2015, the university will boast a free bike share program for students, thanks to Charleston, South Carolina, based Gotcha Ride. “You’ve seen them in big cities like New York and London,” Parking Services Manager Don Andrae said, explaining the free bike share program will be similar to paid ones in large cities. The 75 blue, three-gear bikes will be situated in corrals in high-traffic areas like campus dorms, Tiger Transit hubs and the Haley Center concourse. Students can borrow a bike for 24 hours without a fee. “We don’t care (where students take the bikes), as long as they brought it back to where they got it from in 24...

Sara Falligant | Opelika-Auburn News | Twitter Auburn University launched its new collegiate car tag this month, which was designed based on input from Alabama Auburn graduates. The tag features the interlocking AU logo on the left—the original AU vanity tag featured Samford Hall, but was changed to the interlocking AU in 1992—a blue stripe at the bottom with “Auburn” in white and “Alabama” at the top in an orange stripe. Fans who purchase the tag can also personalize the available six characters for free. State law requires collegiate tag designs be changed every five years. “This past year, we did a survey of our in-state alumni,” explained Debbie Shaw, Ph.D., vice president of alumni affairs. “Our university communications office designed several choices. …We just decided to let our ...

The city landed a major golf tournament that will pump millions into the local economy. One of the city’s largest employers announced a major expansion. “We’ve been blessed,” Fuller said. “I consider us very fortunate.” Fuller recently discussed those successes, along with the opportunities and challenges facing Opelika, in 2015. AUBURN, Alabama -- Once catering to high-temperature days spent carelessly drifting along the lazy river or shooting at high speeds down the body flumes, Auburn's Surfside Water Park now sits stagnant as nothing more than a set of abandoned structures that have some Auburn residents concerned for its future. "The abandoned water park is an eyesore and a public nuisance, and it's shameful that the city shows so little concern about the appearance of the southern entrance to the Loveliest Village," said John Varner, who has lived in the area since 1977. According to revenue office records, the park on Highway29/South College Street closed in July 2012. Not only does Varner consider its remains a public nuisance and an eyesore, but he also said it is a breeding ground for pests, a venue fo...

Sara Falligant | Opelika-Auburn News | Twitter Spotlights danced over East University Drive Tuesday to announce the grand opening of Auburn’s Carmike Wynnsong 14 BigD auditorium. Formerly the Wynnsong 16, the BigD auditorium combined three existing auditoriums to create the premium moviegoing experience.
