Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News With every kilometer completed and every hole made under par, participants in an upcoming 5K run and golf tournament will know that their athletic efforts will help fill the bellies of Lee County children who are hungry. The Jason Dufner Charitable Foundation will be hosting its inaugural Dufner Dash and Bash at the ALFA Barn at Auburn University March 20 and its second annual Celebrity Golf Classic at Moore’s Mill Club March 23.   Former Auburn University golf team member and current PGA pro Jason Dufner and his wife Amanda started the foundation in 2009 as an initiative to end childhood hunger in Lee County. By Connor Sheets | csheets@al.com  Alabama has a strong tradition of protecting property rights against incursions by government, but the usurping power of eminent domain has long played a key role in the statewide march toward development and progress. The legal power of eminent domain, by which a government or agency acquires privately-owned real estate in order to facilitate development deemed to be in service of the public good, has cleared the way for everything from highways to courthouses across Alabama, and it continues to do so to this day. But eminent domain and its place in society have undergone a fundamental reassessment in the wake of the 2005 U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v. City of New London. The case pitted New London homeowner Suzette Kelo against the Connect...

Associated Press | WASHINGTON (AP) — Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates fell this week, resuming their downward trend of this year after rising slightly last week. Rates are near historically low levels. Mortgage company Freddie Mac said Thursday that the nationwide average for a 30-year mortgage declined to 3.59 percent from 3.66 percent last week. The average rate is at its lowest level since May 2013. The rate for the 15-year loan, a popular choice for people who are refinancing, eased to 2.92 percent from 2.98 percent last week. A year ago, the average 30-year mortgage stood at 4.23 percent and the 15-year mortgage at 3.33 percent. Mortgage rates have remained low even though the Federal Reserve in October ended its monthly bond purchases, which were meant to hold down long-term ...

Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News A phishing scam using text messages to prompt Lee County residents to give away personal information has affected many over the course of two weekends so far this year, according to a representative of Auburn University Federal Credit Union. Sharon Nichols, Assistant Vice President for Member Services, said that someone claiming to be Auburn University Federal Credit Union has been sending text messages, primarily to those with AT&T cell phone service, stating that customers’ banks accounts will be deactivated unless they call a given number. Once the number is called, an automated response asks customers for personal information including card numbers and PIN numbers. Nichols said the text messages have been sent to people who are both members of th...

A good real estate agent is always focused on delivering value to his or her clients. While different markets sometimes demand different things, ultimately the work of a Realtor revolves around some core principles based on how buying and selling real estate works. That’s why you will never hear your Realtor say things like: 1. “Buyers are going to love your Bull Mastiff!” Your agent may love your dog as much as you do, but he or she will ask you to remove it when showing the house. This is one of the hardest things for pet lovers to hear, but buyers probably don’t want to meet your dog. In fact, if you have pets in the house when people come to view it, you are not helping your sale. This is why you can expect any Realtor to ask you to remove the animal, preferably to another home. Mo...

In this image, the area outlined in black shows the boundary of the proposed six-month moratorium, which is on the agenda for tonight's (2/3/15) City Council meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. The image also shows the University Service-2 zone, which was denied in 2007. The US-2 zone could come back up for consideration in the near future. The most perfect scenario would be to sell your current property at exactly the same time as buying your next one. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. There are people out there who could afford to pay two mortgages. However, the majority of us would be a little worried about having to do so. Therefore, most of us have to choose either one option or the other. So then the question is should I buy first or sell first? In general, selling first will most likely put you under time pressure to buy another house in a really short time. You may end up settling for less than you want or overpaying for your new house or you might even have to look for a place to stay until you can find a new home. If you decide to buy first, and then you can’t sell your current house, there is a possibility of ...

Allison Blankenship allison@auburnvillager.com@ac_blankenship on Twitter | 0 comments Work will soon begin on a new dog park in Town Creek Park on Gay Street and is estimated to be completed by March. Auburn Parks and Recreation Director Becky Richardson said the dog park is coming after feedback from residents. "We have been getting requests for an additional dog park for a while, and we have been looking at not just Town Creek, but other sites as possible places," she said. With restrooms and parking easily accessible, Town Creek Park arose as the best, most cost-effective option. The project will include clearing a 10-foot vegetated area and planting new evergreens for screening around the dog park. A 4-foot vinyl-coated chain link fence will enclose the area, opening at a double-gat...

Allison Blankenship allison@auburnvillager.com@ac_blankenship on Twitter | 0 comments Beginning Saturday, Jan. 31, the City of Auburn's Parks and Recreation Department, partnered by Opelika Parks and Recreation, Auburn University and East Alabama Medical Center, will offer 10 weekly fitness events to encourage health in the community. The events are a part of Scale Back Alabama (SBA), a free statewide weight-loss program designed to encourage Alabamians to get healthy and have fun doing it. The city has participated in SBA since 2007, but this is the first year community events will be offered. "We tried to come up with different activities, so it's not just the typical 'go to the gym' or 'walk around your neighborhood,' which are both great activities," said Alison Hall, community and ...

Real estate blog ranks the ’10 Best Places in Alabama’  The Movoto Real Estate blog is back with another list, this time ranking what they believe to be the “10 Best Places in Alabama.” While any list like this tends to be highly subjective, Movoto has attempted to lay out some measurable criteria used to come up with their results. The seven criteria they use in their rankings are: 1. Total Amenities2. Quality of Life (cost of living, median home price, median rent, median household income, teacher per student ratio)3. Total Crimes4. Tax Rates (sales tax, income tax)5. Unemployment6. Commute Time7. Weather (temperature, air quality) “With these criteria in mind, we looked at the U.S. Census data for places in Alabama with a population of more than 5,000 people, which came to 102 locale...

Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News Barking is allowed, leashes aren’t required and running fast is encouraged. The City of Auburn has plans to establish a leash-free zone for four-legged friends to roam in the form of a new dog park located in Town Creek Park on South Gay Street. The dog park, which will be the second in the city behind the existing one at Kiesel Park, will be fully accessible and in compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines. Alison Boykins Frazier, Auburn’s public works representative for the project, said the idea for the dog park at Town Creek came following a request from a disabled resident. “In September, the city received a request by a disabled resident for access to the dog park (at Kiesel),” Frazier said. “While temporary accommodation...
