I am not a fan of a cashless society - look what happened when there was a flawed software update that made Microsoft systems inaccessible. You can bet if something like that happens when we're in a cashless society, you won't be buying anything. No food, gas, groceries, medicine, etc etc. No thank you - I'm sticking with my cash, coins and all.

I will continue to use my coins as long as I can. They do get a big heavy in my purse, so I keep giving them back. As long as we all keep using them, they should remain for some time.

About three years ago, I had collected about $350 dollars in coins. so I took them to the bank. The teller said " We don't accept more than two rolls of each at a time" So, next week, I took more rolls. The teller said, your account has been noted that we do not accept coins. I asked, do you know how to count? About a month later, I changed banks. The other bank took them gladly:) Katina

Are you talking about Investment value / intrinsic worth, Richie Alan Naggar ?

What is the METAL CONTENT of those coins?  Are they real silver, real copper, real nickel?  Or are they modern U.S. Mint coins that consist of zinc, tin, and other non-precious invaluable metals?

Pre-1965 quarters, dimes, half dollars (and the older silver dollars) are 90% or more real silver. Any culture, any country, will accept those coins.

When the Economy collapses, people who have rolls/bags of silver coins will be able to barter, swap, exchange those coins for goods and services.  But America's current coins will be worthless... nobody will want them.

The same with "paper money".  The lessons of history remind us of the German (Weimar Republic) Deutsche marks in the 1930's.  You probably know the story of the German man who took a wheelbarrow full of German marks to a bank, he left it at the front door, when he went inside the bank, robbers left the Deutsche marks on the ground and stole the wheelbarrow.

Or The Confederate States of America paper dollars.  They may have "collector value", but are otherwise next to worthless. I have a stack of Confederate paper money that Grandma left me... I might get a couple of bucks for it on eBay, but those $50 and $100 notes that Grandma inherited from her Grandfathers will not bring me the face value of those bills.

And don't get me started on electronic/digital money, which can disappear with the flip of a switch.

May I respectfully suggest, change your change into real silver coins and real gold coins. It is one of the most tangible investments that you can make!

Personally, I like getting a handful of coins and looking for wheat pennies and other old coins in my change.  My car console usually is close to full, so if I go through a drive thru, I can hit the non-dollar total with no problem.  Or if I want to cause smoke to come out of the kid taking up the money, hand him a combo above asking so that I get fewer coins back.

Ah, the age-old question of coins—those pesky little metal discs gathering dust at the bottom of your drawer. Or between the cushions of your couch. Or under your car seat!

You’ve got it right; nickels and dimes are starting to feel more like historical artifacts than currency. So, why carry around coins when they weigh down pockets like a rock collection gone rogue?

With credit cards and debit cards becoming the norm, why even bother with coins in the first place? A quick swipe or tap, and you're done! And if you’re  one of those who still uses real money, rounding prices to the nearest dollar would eliminate the hassle of change, keeping it simple for you and your wallet.

Think about it: those coins cost more to make than their actual value. It’s like buying a gold-plated paperclip! Who wants to dig around for that elusive penny when just a card swipe can get you your morning coffee?

Imagine a world where prices end in zero. Like 100 cents? A dollar bill, that you very much. 500 cents? A fiver will do just fine! Suddenly, math becomes much easier! Forget frantic digging through your bag for spare change—smooth transactions are the way to go.

In a cashless society, coins may soon be as relevant as dial-up internet. Embrace the digital revolution! Save those coins as souvenirs, or hand them over to kids—they love finding treasure.

So yes! Let’s consider a future where coins take a backseat, your sanity remains intact, and you can enjoy the convenience of cashless transactions. All aboard the cashless train to convenience town!

I have a bag of silver coins and toss my change into a crystal vase for my vacation fund.  When I am ready to depart, I roll the coins and turn them in.  It's like guessing how many M&Ms are in the jar.😎  I also agree with Kat Palmiotti

While not a fan of a cashless society I am guilty of no longer carrying coins in my pocket. I use my credit card for almost everything and pay the balance in full on the invoice date. If I get coins when paying cash, I give them to my wife or place them in the tip jar, never in my pocket.

I vote for cash, but I think we should eliminate pennies like they do in Canada.  They round up or down as needed and it works just fine.  It would save our country a lot of money to quit making pennies.

- cash is more accountable

- some places only take cash

- some retailers offer a cash discount due to bank fees on card purchases

- when the digital world fails, cash is reliable

They have been fighting to get rid of the penny for years.  I think most can agree the penny serves very little use, but Illinois (the land of Lincoln) has been fighting the demise of the penny tooth and nail and shows no signs of letting up.

I am not headed to a cashless society.  I give my grandkids my coins for their banks.

I spend cash a lot.  If I buy a tire and pay with a $100 cash at a local place and he goes and takes his family out to dinner and pays with $100 cash the restaurant owner goes to buy groceries with that $100 it's still $100.  If I pay with a credit card and they charge the owner of tire place $4.00 it's 96.00 and if eats out with credit that $100 is down to 92.16 and then at if he buyers groceries the store gets 88.48.  We should all be using cash when we shop.  Credit cards are of course a necessity for some things, but cash if far better when it can be used.

I am very much NOT in favor of the cashless society.  They have that in China right now.  They have controls that do not allow you to save.  You have to spend the money or you lose it.  They can also block you entirely from accessing it if you are near an anti-communist or pro-Hong Kong protest.  They tie it to the social credit system, which also is used to control your ability to travel.  No, so many reasons to fight to the death against a cashless society.  Not to mention, supporting causes becomes much harder.  No longer will there be a collection plate at church.  No longer can you anonymously support your favorite politician or cause.  Just look at what Canada and Justin Trudau did to the people who sent money to support the Trucker Convoy.  They froze all their banking assets.  If they had used cash, they were safe.  If they didn't they were locked out.  If you don't have cash, and something like that happens, you will have no way to pay for groceries, your mortgage/rent, utilities, etc.

I could go on and on about this.

Aside from that, I collect my coins and take them to the coinstar machine at the market.  At a house we bought recently, there was a regular size bottle of detergent that was FULL OF PENNIES.  The prior owner didn't want it, so I took it and went to coinstar.  4,181 pennies later, I got half my grocery bill paid for!

Oh, and yes I carry a coin purse in my car and usually remember to bring it with me when I buy things so I can pay in exact change.  Some small businesses now, and more every day, are giving a discount for paying cash because they don't have to pay the 3%-5% processing fee for credit cards on it.  Having a card processing account, I know that amount adds up fast.

Other then when in a foreign country, I haven't carried cash on my person in easily 10 years. It wasn't even a conscious decision, I just stopped since everyone takes credit and many no longer accept cash. It also helps with the homeless...well until they get hip to the Square 😂
But, I would hate to not have the choice since cash doesn't require power or tech to operate.

Saving money, kids using their banks, rolling up the currency is a healthy habit. Canada stopped pennies years ago.

My four kids all picked potatoes... school goes in three weeks early, gets out for three weeks for harvest. When your nine year old goes into Walmart on Saturday night and studies an item for $3.60. Then puts it back on the shelf and says "Dad, that's not worth what I made picking six barrels of potatoes".

She worked too hard to part with money that easily if the value is not there. Collecting money slowly, saving it, managing it and taking care of what you purchase with it is a valuable life skill.

Not a believer in cashless society. You want kids to know the value of working for it and managing what they earn through labor and life skills. Nickel and dime and quarters add up and make dollars.

Richie- I rarely use cash if it's over a certain amount. However, I do have coins and real money available. When we first moved to FL in 1987, most banks were regional and I'm not even sure if there were ATM's. We went to a bank to try to open an account (on a Friday) but they were so rude, Larry and I decided to wait until the following Monday.

Thankfully we had cash with us and were able to use it for our meals, etc for the weekend.

I don't ever want to depend solely on the digital world.

Richie Alan Naggar - I do not want a cashless society. I like to have options, use credit cards for this, that, and the other. Use Cash for tips instead of adding it to my credit card or for toll booths in parking lots. But I am seeing signs in my area that I do not like. No, I do not like it all, and others are talking it about too. For example, I went to Meryl Normans a couple of weeks ago and the owner complained to me that she doesn't have quarters to give me as change because her bank tells her, they are out and they don't know when or if they will get them. She is really upset because she is a small cosmetic business owner and needs to have quarters, other coins, and bills in her cash register for change to give her customers. When I asker if if she tried another bank she said, she tried several and she can't get anyone to give her quarters.

Then there was an argument in a small restaurant that has culturally diverse food. A woman went up to the counter to pay for her food with cash and the Cashier refused to take her $20.00 bill. Cashier said, credit card only. Customer said loudly, "Legal Tender is a form of money and according to the law, her $20.00 is good and our government recognizes it as satisfactory payment."

Cashier shouted back, not here. Not in this restaurant. We take Credit Cards only or I call the Police. I don't know what happened next. I just knew it was getting very heated in there.

I'm keeping my eyes and ears open.

While I haven't been active in quite a long time - I grew up as a young numismatist (coin collector) - having won scholarships to attend the American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar a couple of times in Colorado. Perhaps at some point I will get back into the hobby, but for now I am focusing my time on my business.

I don't see this tangible form of currency disappearing anytime soon. There are practical, economic and collector interests in this quandary. 30+ years ago there were talks about getting rid of the penny - and yet it's still with us and the argument to rid ourselves of a coin that is far more expensive to produce than its face value remains unchanged (that's so punny).

The bigger question is will we be still having this same conversation 30+ years from now.
