That's interesting - but can trespassers read purple paint and understand the meaning?

I would use metal signs that are more threatening and include statute that applies. Spanish and English. Reflective.

Painting the trees should work well for those potential trespassers who cannot read signs.

But if trespassers ignore No Trespassing signs, why would they stop at Purple Paint?

That would be "Welcome" to me since purple is my favorite color. Post a sign. No one will know what that means otherwise. Wow the other 49 really are Koo Koo 😉😂

Here orange paint is the no-trespassing sign - so we sprayed a bunch of trees/posts around our property edge. But we also put up a few signs on the road edge.

I have no idea if it is or is not in Cali.  I have heard of it once before in other parts of the country.  Out here I think the basic sign works.

I know from watching Northwoods Law and other shows on Discovery Channel there is something to purple paint.  I do not recall what it is and have no clue how it might apply in Ca.

In Texas, purple paint is used to indicate "no trespassing" on property. The paint marks can be placed on trees, posts, or fences!

Is there a purple paint law in Maryland?

No, Maryland uses blue paint for no-trespassing zones, providing an alternative to traditional signs.

As far as I know, no purple paint law in Ohio, and although we have plenty of woods around us, we also border I-71 so probably not an optimal place for hunting.

However, our next place in WV borders a wildlife management area of 1000 acres, and while the steepness of the mountain might keep most casual hunters off our land, we do have the purple paint option (law passed in 2016) that would allow us to mark the trees at the bottom (once we find the surveyor's stakes from last year.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Well, you made me do some research, Fred! While I live on the NC/SC line, I did not know that and I found it applies to NC too:

Yes, purple paint on trees or posts in North Carolina can indicate private property and no trespassing, but only in certain circumstances:
  • The paint must be authorized by the North Carolina Landowner Protection Act
  • The paint is used to prohibit hunting, fishing, and trapping, but not general trespass like hiking or birdwatching
  • The paint markings must be easily visible to passers-by, no more than 120 square inches, and posted in visible areas
  • The paint markings should be 8 inches long by 1 inch wide, 3–5 feet above the ground, and placed on multiple trees or objects no more than 100 feet apart
  • The paint can be used in the form of a vertical line or paint marks

That all shared, I did not know what that meant and I believe I'm smarter than the average bear...so, I'd stick with the metal signs until the purple streak is as commonplace as a railroad crossing sign!!

First I heard of it as well. Will need to look into this further, Fred, as I sell in SC and also wondering if it's crept into NC.

Purple and Chrome/Aluminum are approved in VA, but both will fade, so you have to keep touching them up. "

"It is unlawful to hunt any unposted property without permission of the landowner and is punishable by a fine of up to $500. A landowner may post their property by any of the following methods:

  • Using aluminum or purple color paint, paint a vertical line at least 2 inches in width and at least 8 inches in length, no less than 3 feet and not more than 6 feet from the ground or normal water surface and visible when approaching their property.
  • Placing signs that specifically prohibit hunting, fishing, or trespassing on their property."  https://dwr.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/

Well that's the first time I've heard of any color paint indicating "No Trespassing"!  Apparently it works in some places, but how would any newcomers know this?
