Well, if I was still in the corporate world, I'd probably like it in principle. In reality, even corporate types work more than the equivalent of 5 days. And in real estate, it's a 7 day a week job for most of us.

I don't know how I feel about it. Is it less time of the same amount of time squeezed into 4 days?

Unless you make it unlawful to work overtime, I think there are those of us who will continue to work the same amount of time.

My wife was a nurse with four day work weeks, but she worked 10 hours.  I was a paint contractor and worked a lot more hours and made a lot less money.  I think we should be able to work as many hours as we want.  I do not like the idea that we would go from 40 hours a week to 32 hours a week and make the same money.  I guess that is a long winded way to say, 'it depends."

I'd propose government move to a 0 day work week, and leave the rest of us to earn what we want based on the work we're willing to do.

Public Sector?   State Employees are already overpaid and under-worked.


Private Sector?   What kind of "government incentive" has ever improved production of anything?


The Maryland Legislature should concentrate on something that matters, like the skyrocketing crime in Baltimore, and the failure of the once great shopping and tourist districts including Harborplace and Fell's Point.

Those who work it seem to like it Buzz Mackintosh Since not all jobs can be 4-days per week, such as police & fire as one group, I prefer the 5-day work week for all. I'm not so sure it would bring substantial cost savings

Lazy is the first word that came to mind. If they are unable to get things done during a 5-day work week, in a timely manner, less will be done in a 4-day work week. But, hey, more money, less effort seems to be a popular trend these days!

When I worked for 21st Century Auto Insurance 20+ years ago, they had a 4.5 day work week.  You were paid based on a 40-hour week but only worked 35.  It was something that the employees really liked as it gave them freedom to start their weekend errands earlier, schedule doctor appointments, etc.

When I went to Guitar Center, one of the VPs there struck up a conversation with me about it, how it worked, how people liked it, etc. as he was trying to bring it to the IT Department there.

When I worked for HCA, one of our Clinical Analysts did the "Four Tens" and worked 40 hours in four days and would have a three day weekend most weeks.  She came from nursing, where that was common.


So long as companies can CHOOSE to do this and offer this benefit, while keeping the lights on and services running, I'm all for it.  When the government mandates it, that's when I'm against it.  Limited government involvement, like the great Ronald Reagan said.  It should stay out of our lives, our healthcare, and our day-to-day lives.

I am retired Buzz Mackintosh and have slowed down to a 5 day work week. Those of us that love working (as God intended) will continue to work no matter what any State Legislature dictates.

If it made good business sense for a business, they'd do it without needing tax incentives.  IMO, tax dollars should be spent in the areas of true government services, not trying to incentivize businesses to "try something different".  

Over the years I've worked 24/7 (Navy), 5 day "regular" workweeks that often led into mandatory weekend overtime, 4 10s that still wound up putting much more than 40 hours, and what seems close to 7/16/363 (I'm off for Christmas and Easter!).  Each has their merits and disadvantages.

The Montgomery County police have a four day work week for patrol officers. 10 hours a day.

I have never had the personal experience of a four day week. Many like it because it is likely to generate overtime for additional income.

Our County police officers also have a lot of other benefits.

I've heard of longer hours and getting an extra day off. If you have an office/business that needs to be open 7 days a week, that might even make sense.  Have 2 people cover the shifts.  Real estate is a different business; I know I'm available 7 days a week to my clients, but also don't need to be in a certain place all the time and can take time to myself.

This is common in law enforcement, nursing & city administration. It makes sense and all benefit from it. One thing though, if it is proven that work can get done in shorter periods of time, that may lead to part time workers.

If it works for the employer that's up to them.  In certain fields they do that by design (nursing, law enforcement, etc.) to allow first responders to decompress but ultimately it's up to the business and whether or not they can maintain productivity.  Certainly isn't going to happen in real estate :)

Buzz Mackintosh If a for-profit company did it and had accountability for all of its employees, I could see it. We had a few O&G companies try a 4 day week 30+ years ago. It worked for them because they had people to answer to...their stockholders.
