What a stupid idea.

I read the article and glanced over the study.
The study found it causes asthma in children, BUT, from the same sources:

"Childhood asthma in the US remains relatively rare, affecting 1 in 12 children" - that's 8.3%.

"New peer-reviewed research published last month in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that more than 12% of current childhood asthma cases in the US can be attributed to gas stove use."

If my math is correct, 12% of asthma cases caused by gas stoves OF  the 8.3% of children with asthma equals ONLY 0.996% percent of total children.

So, they are proposing banning gas stoves because it can potentially affect 0.996% percent of children in the US - what?

I'm not even going into the validity of the study.

They are moving toward eliminating gas stoves in new construction in certain communities in my local market (Boulder County Colorado) but I was shocked to see this article come out today indicating a move to eliminate them at the federal level .  It doesn't seem like the research is sufficient to justify such a move.  There certainly are more concerning negative impacts on children in our society that should be addressed as a priority, but that's a different discussion.

To answer your question, I know many that love to cook on gas stoves and finding a home with one or the ability to hook one up is a sought after feature.  I would think it would increase demand for properties with gas stoves, though I don't know that it would put a noticeably higher price tag on them.  It also depends on what penalties local municipalities put on homes with gas stoves (i.e. exorbitant rate for natural gas).

Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate - thanks for providing the article. This is the first time I heard about it and I say HOGWASH! They are trying desperately to stop producing gas and planting bad seeds into our heads. The plot continues to thicken. The truth is "Biden Seeks Fossil-Free Federal Buildings in Hit to Gas Consumers........ climate control.... blah! blah! blah!

Both of my children had Asthma, my son (the youngest had it the worst). I spent the majority of his life and mine at doctor offices, hospitals, and putting him through numerous tests that brought me down to my knees with tears that never stopped flowing. Each doctor had a different theory about what causes asthma and all those needles, inhalers, prescription drugs, steroids, getting rid of the dog, tearing up and removing the carpets, drapes, bedding, etc., none of that worked until.....

my husband (smoker) died. When he died, the asthma stopped until....

about a year later both of my kids stood up to a wedding. The wedding party and most of their guests were smokers. Both of my kids got asthma AGAIN!

When my daughter moved to teach in JAPAN for four and 1/2 years, she dealt with Asthma again and learned to avoid going to public places where people were smoking. When she moved back to the USA and started teaching at La Jolla, CA and living in San Diego she loved it because she had a healthier life style and spent her free time surfing.

To this day (both are adults) they know better than to be anywhere where there are tobacco smokers (which is much rarer today).

Before moving to TX, I had gas kitchen stoves in IL. So did all my relatives. My kids never got sick with asthma from gas stoves.

Impacting the value of homes - HOGWASH! However, unfortunately, propaganda is very effective.

FURTHERMORE, what's next???

What Appliances Use Natural Gas in a House?
  • Cooktops, Ovens, Ranges, Stoves, and Grills.
  • Air Conditioning.
  • Clothes Dryers.
  • Refrigerators and Freezers.
  • Natural Gas Hazards and Precautions.

Can you tell my blood is boiling????

People, especially chefs, that I know HATE electric stove tops and much prefer gas.  If they actually do get banned, I think the value of homes with them will go up, at least with certain demographics (people who cook).

Home is where the hearth is.

I don't know if it would affect the value of a home either positively nor negatively.  I wasn't aware of this proposed ban, but I'll go on record and say "it ain't gonna happen in my lifetime".

This has been discussed and voted on already in CA, kinda old news, so I won't bother about the article because it's a done deal here in 2030 and was about lowering the fossil fuel dependency; the environment - not specifically health issues. We're 7 years away from that taking affect, but at some point in 2029 I'm sure the cost of conversion will be something we negotiate. However in 2030, we just no longer sell these items, it's not saying natural gas will cut off though until after 2040. Kinda like CA smog on cars and CA low flow appliances and fixtures, it's just life in CALI.

I'd say too early to tell.  I think California has made them illegal in new homes starting in a few years.

I'm with Dario Ferreira on this.....another stupid idea.  For years gas stoves were considered to be the best type of stove for many reasons. I'm going through my head counting the numbers.. we've got a gas dryer as well as gas fireplace plus a gas stove. And we're supposed to replace all 3 items for some ridiculous reason. Stupid. At some point folks will come back around and be wanting gas back.  I've seen this all before back in the 80's.

Worries about why so many people are dying, especially young people, with heart problems after getting the jab in our country, should definitely rate higher than this propaganda designed to get to the emotions.

Just another ploy to take attention away from what's really happening...

Most of the buyers in my area love gas.  Not sure this would go over very well.  Seems like a really bad idea.  I realize CA has already passed such a deal ... but that can be changed too!  Nothing seems to be forever now a days.

I have some clients from NY who told me this would be coming down the line. We have builders putting them in like crazy. I like my gas stove for cooking. I hear people really like induction stoves.

On another note, we have gas heat, water heater and a fireplace. Are they going to ban those too? On the few occasions the power goes out, We're usually nice and toasty, can take a hot shower and cook on our stove.

I have an electric stove now & if I could, I would get a gas one.

Oh if buyers can find a way to ask for a credit they will...!  Meanwhile, the perceived value of a house w/ a gas stove is higher around here but not enough to "make or break" a decision about a house in general.

I will take a look at the article Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate BUT I just read an AARP piece on stoves and propane (not the same as gas but often mistakenly so by most people) is considered even safer than electric stoves.

Wow, Fred! The Nanny State is in full force. If I didn't know better, I'd think this was an article from The Onion. Wonder how many left-wing chefs are aware of this. Not such a fan of gas stoves myself as we used to have to light the pilot manually years ago. (Click, click...boom!) Even so, this is a huge overreach by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. How would this affect Wolff and other high end appliance manufacturers? Let me guess? Mandatory solar and electric ranges. Great way to stimulate the economy... by force and uberregulation, as usual....Look at this link from UCF! Solar Cookers - FSEC® (ucf.edu)
