There are not many WWII veterans left. My uncle will turn 100 on August 22 this year. Sorry for your loss. They were a different generation and deserve all the honors they get.

Fred, your family is in my thoughts and prayers.  Those men in the USAAF were a rare breed who manned the B-17's and other bombers during WWII.  The chances of completing 25 combat missions over occupied Europe were not good for the air crews with enemy fighters and the vicious flak.   

You might enjoy reading this post by Carole Provenzale (Laura Cerrano's mom) about her dad, Lt. Col. Peter Provenzale,  who appeared in Clark Gable's Combat America as the famous movie star  flew a couple of combat  missions with his crew.

I don't think the link to Combat America is active anymore but you can find it on You Tube.   It really gives us Americans generations later,  a good idea how courageous these men were to fly those combat missions deep into the heart of Nazi Germany and back.

May he rest in peace and may we continue to honor the service of the men and women of The Greatest Generation.

The planes back then are not the same as todays. They were cold, noisy, uncomfortable, no safety features etc. To operate one successfully took training, commitment and seasoning.
