I just sold an Arizona home that had 3 wells

1. electric

2. Wind

3. Solar

The electric was the most dependable and steady. All three worked though.

A tried and true method of running a pumpjack, though living in a valley you may have trouble with wind turbulence which will cause extra wear and tear on your windmill.

My grandfather used to have one of these, however he replaced it with an electric motor before I came along.  He said it was constantly broken down and fairly dangerous to work with.

Before investing in a well and windmill you may want to do some exploring uphill from your camp and find a spring that you can tap into.  Once found, shove a roll of that black tubing into it and gravity will do the rest.

I know nothing about them either, Fred.

We recently joked that we have so much wind off of the lake, we should have one to power the house!

Nothing I can help you with here.
I do have a windmill conneced to a pump jack that recirculates the water in the bird bath. It is more yard art than a house essential. Priming 10 feet of tubing is less burdensome than 110 vertical feet of composite piping.

I have only seen them in person on the rural farms here in NH. The land owners swear by them.

At 110 feet you probably need a submersible pump to push the water up because pull pumps can't draw water that deep. A 100 foot drive shaft under a windmill doesn't sound feasible. However, a windmill to run a generator that runs the pump would work.

I still see some in use on farms around here, but most have become yard art and are just for decoration these days. Most of the ag wells now are usuing electric, or a generator to power them when needed. Interest has picked up in wind power for electricity, but I don't see many people actually installing wind turbines yet.

My only experience with windmills to pump water is 2 of our local golf courses use them. Also, Fred, get yourself a subscription to Mother Earth News. Monthly articles on living "off-grid" along with numerous tips for life in general. I've been reading it for probably 30-40 years.

I remember a windmill on Benn Hill in Hodgdon ME as a kid. My mom's dairy farm had one but it went into disrepair and is now gone. Interesting though. Parked and watching, reading what you glean Fred Griffin Tallahassee Real Estate .

Fred,

We had an electric pump for our well in Napa, and I am not sure a windmill would have worked.  I am certain that a windmill would work for you, if there is enough wind, and it would pump enough for your needs.
