Personal preference but, from a germaphobe's perspective, chances of 'contamination' is far higher in a closed cabinet with the rims DOWN. UNLESS, of course, you clean out the bottom of the cabinet several times each month and I still don't think you can remove all of the bacteria from the cabinet shelves!

I just can't get past the dirty bottoms of cabinets that were likely someone elses before I bought the place! You don't know what kind of bacteria is festering there...and about to inhabit the rims of your upside down glasses! LOL

Some are upright, some are not. No strong preference but if they havebeen upright for a long time it's time to wipe out or wash.

The wine glasses don't sit upright long enough to gather much dust in the cupboard. LOL

I see this as a preference issue ... no right or wrong way.

Drinking glasses are placed right side up ...

Champagne, wine, martini, etc are also right side up.

Why?

Over the years, I have "displayed" glassware/stemware both ways but consisently one way.  "Everything in its place" kinda thing.   I don't have a spreadsheet or planagram for such things but generallly upside down.  Why?  Why not--I have heard all sorts of reasons but it's not really a deal-killer for me.

Right side up for frequently used glasses, so that when you grab one it's ready to use.  Down for glasses that don't get used much to prevent dust from getting in, although the outside may still need a wipe down, but at least you're not contaminating the insides with water and possibly having some remaining when you put in the other liquid.

Fred,

I like there right side up, and the same with wine glasses.  No right/or wrong!  It is our preference.  We rotate them, and use them often.  They do not have a chance to get dusty. A

I've got them both ways.  Upside down keeps the inside from getting dusty, but they look nicer right side up.  And the ones I use every day are right side up....except stemware...that's always right side up.

To be honest, I never gave this much thought, Fred. I put mine right side up... then again, my glasses are "circulated" frequently enough that I don't worry about dust in them. And I have never seen a bug in my house or cabinets. My fine crystal is always right side up to not nick it.

Cups, glasses, & stemware is right side up. I do this because a previous owner painted the shelves and I do not trust the paint.

I alternate them, one up, one down.  They usually fit in the cabinet better.  Now, Mary Margaret, she puts them in willy nilly.  It drives me crazy!  And DO NOT get me started on the tupperware!

I say bottoms up.
House mate says they should be displayed as used.
The cupboard suggests some confusion on who is in control of the cupboard.
In this house there is the frequently used that includes the dishware needed for the patio evening wine and the Sunday dinner.
The other 17 cupboards contain incredibly expensive settings that will never be used. They seem to be like books, so very hard to discard.
Someone needs to assert some control.

I know folks put them upside down to prevent dust from collecting inside...but think about it...if they're dusty on the outside, clean on the inside...you still have to wash before use, thus a pointless exercise.

We don't have a large collection and we use them all weekly, all drinking glasses are right side up as they should be. We have a large coffee mug collection, they are bottom row upside down so we can stack a top row right side up. Wine glasses hang upside down and champagne flutes are chilling sideways in the fridge, while beer mugs chill right side up in the freezer.

You now know the Nelson organization's drinking vessl plan.

I think in the end it comes down to a matter of habit or preference, although the advice for fine crystal stemware is to place it right side up for greater stability since the stems are delicate.  Interestingly, we do wine and water glasses right side up, but coffee cups upside down.

Fascinating as we all visit with this...There are light fixtures that when changing the light bulb, you notice bugs, dust etc. in the covering. How did they get in? How much more with glasses in cupboard over time?

I would have said rim side down but really didn't have a why. That's the way my mom did it and my step-mom did it. My MIL even stored hers upside down. My daughter stores hers upside down probably because that's the way we do it. We put contact paper down to protect the cabinets and it is easily cleaned. If you live in the south I suppose it is easy to get the occassional bug no matter how clean your house is so that is one good consideration. I had to know the answer so I looked it up. Apparently there is no right or wrong way and you can even store them a combination of both ways. It is recommended to store fragile glasses such as wine glasses right side up because the rim is the most delicate part of the glass. Here's what Martha says about it.
