If there is a large difference between # of votes for candidates, it'll be called on election day. If the difference is small, they'll count and recount every absentee ballot/etc and it will take a while. Whichever is the path chosen, eventually we'll find out....

20 years ago it was December 17th when Florida had all the hanging chads.  I don't expect it won't be resolved by year's end.  Hopefully on election night we will know.

It will be official on January 6.  Electors from each state vote on December 14 (Monday after the second Wednesday).  Certified elector votes are due by December 23 (fourth Wednesday in December). On January 6, joint sessions meet to certify the elector votes.  That's when it becomes official.

I fear it will be months as well - and in fact, just had this conversation with a dear friend of mine. 

I also fear that if one party loses, we will rapidly move into a civil war. The other party, I believe, has more dignity and will be 'good sports' about the loss...but, that's the one I hope wins!

Who knows? Scary! I think all states should be synchronized in the way they count early and mail-in votes. In a battle state such as Pennsylvania, for example, it is unthinkable for them not to even begin the mail in/early count until election day.
