Home is where the hearth is.

I vaguely remember veterans selling them on street corners selling them for veterans charities... and you wore the poppies on your lapel, or hung them from your rear-view mirror in support of the military.

I may be too young to remember that, or too Californian...poppies are our state flower and you can't pick them, it's illegal...so maybe they never did it here?

Yes Will, I do remember poppies being sold in front of grocery stores and malls and the Lady Elks would also sell them for their scholarship program.

Yes.  There was a lady in my hometown of Venice who sold poppies on Memorial Day for a dime (for donations to American Legion or some group).  My grandmother told me that the woman's husband had died in World War I; the tradition was from the poppy fields of Belgium.

We moved to Brevard, NC when I was 12 years old, and everybody in town wore them on Memorial Day.  Same story - they were cloth poppies on a wrapped wire stem; they were sold to raise money for the American Legion.

But somewhere in time the tradition of the poppies faded away (at least for me).  I don't see them anymore.

In Canada, the veterans / legion members sell poppies to be worn on Rememberance Day. Money from the official poppy campaign goes into a trust and provides assistance to veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP and their families. #WeWillNeverForget

I do know that and, that the American Legion brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day. On May 22, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform.

In Flanders Fields - National Poppy Day broadens a tradition that dates back to the American Legion Auxiliary's first National Convention in the early 1920s when the red poppy was adopted as The American Legion Family's memorial flower. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of honor for the sacrifice of our veterans.

In Canada, the poppy is the official symbol of remembrance. It was adopted as such in 1921 and it is to be worn during the two weeks leading up to 11 November, Remembrance Day.
The Royal Canadian Legion, which has trademarked the image, suggests that poppies be worn on the left lapel, or as near the heart as possible.
