I myself would be staying put Sam Shueh unless you are in danger of the wild fires. I'm a survivalist, I have two power generators. If I was warned of a blizzard that would knock out the power I'd fill up my gas cans and stay until I ran out of gas for the generators.

Maybe best to evacuate but easier said than done. Waiting in the darkness with no power is not a good option either.

It's a tough issue. The problem is those without power might not get the alerts regarding evacuations. There are several hundred thousand here in San Diego County that I think have had their power cut off earlier today.

As far as evacuation, go if you are told to leave.

If the fires are in your path, I would evacuate.  If not I probably would stick it out.  You may need a generator to be more comfortable and plenty of batteries.

Here in CT many of our power lines are on poles, not underground, so when we have significant winds or snow & ice we are at risk of losing our electric. I've been without electric for long stretches of time & like many others here we have a generator now. I got it hooked up hours before a big storm several years ago. We lost power that storm, I fired up the generator & we had what we needed- heat, several lights, refrigerator, a TV (no cable service) that we could watch DVD's on & a way to charge our phones. Just keep a few giant gas containers handy & we chain our generator up with a very thick chain to an iron railing. Before I got the generator I moved my family out of my house when we lost power for an 8 day long stretch. You can't live without heat here.

Did you seek a safer place (meaning a place with power provided by Pacific Electric) or were you in the path of flames.

Flames, very much like storm surge does not care if one has a whole house generator or not. Get OUT!

The problem often is, those who evacuate can ot return until the authorities give permission. This can be more frustrating than the event that caused the evacuation.  In a case here in Fl the community was closed until the EPA could complete a contamination study. That took a while.

Be sure to send the bill and a thank you note to Nancy and the Seirra Club.

Sorry to hear this. As to whether to stay or go, it depends on how comfortable you are in your house with no power. We have lost power and usually stay. However, it is winter so our food isn't spoiling, we can use our gas fireplace, and we have candles and flashlights for nighttime. We also have a gas water heater and stove so we do have hot water for showers and we can cook on the stove or even on our gas grill. Good luck!

Seek bids on off grid solar- independent from PGE. I have two children in college in Bay area without power- Berkeley and Stanford are closed. Dumb solution. PGE needs to ground their wires and upgrade to be safe in 90 mile an hour winds.

Hi Sam,
Personally, I would evacuate. Get out of the way and find a safe, comfortable place to wait it out.  When you're ready for a stable supply of the lowest cost power in the nation come to Central Washington.

Yeup.  And the last blaze was caused by one of their newer "safer" towers.  I'd get a portable generator and a LOT of fuel.  It also depends on your needs.  I'd imagine that homes w/o power would be a playground for criminals.

It does not seem that turnng off the power helps stops fires as they happen anyway. Turning off the power seems extreme to me. Their high tension lines should be able to withstand wind. If i lived their i would be getting generator and perhaps some solar pannels. I hope your power comes back quickly so you can go home.

Be prepared if you must stay-put. Have at least 3 Days worth of Clean Drinking Water; 2 weeks or more of supply is better; and have food available that stores well and doesn't require cooking to consume; along with some precious metals (brass and lead) - and wait it out as long as possible.

Otherwise, with a full tank of gas you can probably make it to our area in SW Washington. The Fall colors are beautiful, and the Power is On!

Darkness with candles, flashlight or generator are choices. I don't blame these people for cutting power. Recently they faced the threat of billions in lawsuits for starting supposed fires which would have led to their bankruptcy. Now, they are pushed into defending their position and survival. This is cause and effect and not for the good as we all see. Blame game failed
