My dad bought me a poinsettia plant for Christmas a few years ago and then he passed away in July.  The plant re-bloomed the following December and for me it was like receiving a hug from Heaven!

Hello Tammy - when I think of poinsettias Carlsbad comes to mind and when the subject is Carlsbad, I think of Jeff Dowler, CRS.  Maybe he can share a few poinsettia points with us.

Yes!  And several other years.  It grew taller than me!  I planted it outside.  I didn't try the force bloom thing.

Haven't had any success myself but my understanding is they are perennials, not annuals. Best of luck - I know a few people who had them bloom again. Sounds like you are doing the right thing.

I can't even keep them alive through one season. I had some beautiful 4 foot tall ones I got from a corporate office who gave me them. I heard Pointsettas can poison cats so I put them outside (because my cat was an inside cat) and they got frozen.

No that's amazing, I would love that. Poinsettias are not suited to my climate or soil. I do introduce a plant in my house each year at the Winter Solstice and my Solstice plant from last year is doing great! Susan H sent me a plant at Christmas the year my husband died and it is doing great.I may give it a shot!

My mother in law kept hers like you and she was successful.  Me on the other hand am no good at inside plants of any kind.

Good luck and let us know if it works for you.

I haven't but, I've heard to keep them in a brown paper bag in controlled temperature.

Never had one make it to the paper bag though!

I tried it once... never worked. I just buy new ones each year. Tried it also with a Christmas cactus... that also never worked!

We had one that had been planted on the side of our first house in Florida and id did bloom. We had to make sure that the light near the plant was off.

End of summer you trim them back about 1/3 and bring indoors- it gets too cold randomly where you live and they can't freeze. They need total darkness from 5:00 PM unti 7:00 AM for 15- 16 days water and wait for soil to dry out. I've been able to get them to become red again outdoors with a cardboard box and a blanket.

I have heard this & always wondered how the plant didn't die. Good luck with it. No one I've known has done it.

I actually did.  Last year I received a few as gifts as well and actually planted them in my yard.  They did ok and I actually did get a random second bloom on one leaf or two.

Yes.  They grow outdoors in HI and there are some beautiful big specimens.  It's a sight to behold on the Big Island at Christmastime.
