It is totally thoughtless & selfish of those who stay behind, putting others' lives at risk who have to rescue them.

They also take those rescuers away from their own families.

I have to agree with you.... those who do not follow instructions during a time of disaster should be ashamed of themselves... at a certain point, there will not be anyone who is able to rescue them... they'll make that known.... it's their choice to stay or go to a shelter... they have no right to put another person in jeopardy because they are "stupid"....

If they are telling you to evacuate it's a serious life or death matter. I've never heard of a false alarm evacuation but I have heard of people stuck & waiting to be rescued because they didn't heed the warning.

If they're in an evacuation area and refuse to leave, I'd spray paint their homes AND their foreheads to let rescuers know that they are the last people to be considered during rescue operations.  Selfish is the only word that comes to mind.

I am not dumb and I am far from being selfish. I listened to them cry wolf far too many times, I have caught them outright lying too many times and watched them exaggerate the damage way too often to abandon my home and go live in a motel where they are just as likely to get hit as here. At least in my home I have the resources to weather it out.

Rescue workers stop rescuing at 45mph winds so they are not put in danger. I have not heard of any rescue workers ever killed during a rescue operation during a hurricane.

Generalizations have never helped anything.

We live on a barrier island so always have mandatory evacuation and we take it seriously, evacuated early and glad we did. You can't fix stupid and there are always those who will stay behind despite all the warnings. We see it every evacuation and it is so sad and unnecessary that people risk not only their personal safety but that of the first responders as well.

Purely selfish behavior that risks first responders. On the news, I saw a man who was heading TOWARD Georgia because he wanted to "hunker down and help keep his mama safe." So now there are 2 people to save.

When my friends were in North Carolina being hit with whichever hurricane, the police went door to door and asked people to write their names with sharpie on their arms to help in identification later in an attempt to strong arm them into leaving. That's not cool either.

Indeed - nothing to mess around with. We see similar situations with fires and floods in CA.  People don't want to leave and they either pay the price and die or others are risking their lives to rescue them.  We can't fix stupid.

Agree that people should evacuate, but we  also have to understand there are MANY people who simply can not afford to do so.  In pride, perhaps they find it  easier to tell others they will stick it out.  Hotels are not cheap, many on fixed  incomes, non-reliable transportation, medical complication, etc.  We are sometimes too quick to  judge.
