I just sold a house 2 weeks ago that had one of those huge powerful fans built into the ceiling, that opened a trap into the attic and exhausted directly out of the roof. The owner was former Air Force, and it seems to me he had a jet engine in there.

The first time I turned it on to max power, opened the front door, I almost got sucked right out and projected onto space.

I used to have an old house that had a whole-house fan and boy, do I miss that thing! I loved sleeping to the calming sound of the fan.

And boy, if you burned something on the stove, turn on the fan and the smoke and odor dissipated in seconds!

Condos don't have those so we rely on a/c and a dehumidifier. It's amazing what a difference a small dehumidifier can make.

Not now but did in a couple of homes back in New England. They were terrific. We see them on occasion here in SoCal. Not warm enough to need them or AC at the moment.

Amazing the power of strategic fan use, for many years we would have one downstairs window open, and one fan upstairs creating a tunnel of air through the building.

Now we use AC more than we should.

I don't. Here in Charlotte we have very few days when we are not running either AC or heat. Not many "in-between" days as you call them. Different climate.

We have some homes built in the 1920's and I have seen those fans in those type of homes.  That's what was used to cool homes back then.

I've sold one or two homes with them, but mine does not have one.  I have radiant heat barrier paint on one flat roof and a heat barrier installed in my attic, plus an attic fan.  Helps reduce the temperature of the attic considerably, which in turn helps my house stay cooler.  Took some other insulating steps this year during my remodel.  Helping a lot.

Kevin, I've had a roof fan for a couple decades, and it does a great job. I don't have a through the ceiling whole house fan, but I've sold a number of houses in my area with them. AC didn't really take off locally until the early 1970s. So those whole house fans were the thing to have.
