Both .....Neither....

You do learn about the other guy - who agrees with one's view point and who doesn't with either type of question. Do people "learn" or change their view point as a result of such "learning"? - not usually.

One truly learns by applying data to their life or biz and finding out if it truely works that way or not for them. The rest is just trivia - unapplied data.

Nothing is gained from provoking with the intent to stir up passionate opposition except for A/R points from the responses.

I feel it cheapens the value of this forum.  I am not happy with the repetitive Utah student questions, but they do not know any better.  The real estate professionals should avoid trying to provoke here, especially when they can slide in a political angle.  That is what Facebook is for.

Asking a question for the sole purpose to build consensus and agreement rarely accomplishes much.  I like differing points of view.

However, from my experience "passionate opposition" usually ends up being disrespectful which turns everyone defensive to their personal opinion / position. That never accomplishes anything either.  So, I'll go with a modified version of #3.  Ask a thought-provoking question with the intent to generate respectful discussion of differing views.

That said, I know you can't legislate "respect" so you usually get what you get when it comes to opposing views.

This is an interactive forum and asking questions to gain more insight or to teach is invaluable. A difference of opinion is expected and can be enlightening but is not necessarily a personal attack. Now,  poking a bear with a sharp stick will definitely get a response!

Provocation is not a type of conversation I like to engage in.  It is what has caused a rift among many.  I love discussions where everyone contributes their thoughts and observations without anyone else jumping all over them because they do not like what the other person said.  We have a mastermind that has led to wonderful insights.  Each one of us has differing viewpoints, and each week we learn.  A

Why provocation? Why not a question to which one is seriously seeking an answer, receiving answers from both ends of the spectrum and everything in between and then moderate a healthy debate?

I learn so much more from conversations like that than those where everyone agrees OR begin piling on, truly representing online bullying at its best.

You like #2 & I'm surprised that you can't figure out that no one wants to play.

Q's here come in all shapes & sizes. One doesn't have to disagree (provoke) to have someone put a damned good idea in the comment. There's been plenty of times when I've said 'woah, I never thought about that'. That's really the knowledge you are after right?

Both can be used effectively.  Opposition does not always lead to new ideas (just look at politics for example, with calling people "Nazis" and "Bigots" being an interntional way of saying "I don't like your poitics").

One learns much about human nature from both: the desire of many to want to fit in and be agreeable, the type of issues that push buttons, that there are others who like to purposely stir the pot....  It's all interesting and lesson-teaching, both to watch and participate in.
