I think it's more important to have a clean, well-maintained car than anything.

I certainly wouldn't think you'd get much respect in an old beaten-up car, for sure.

If you're worried about how others will judge you by the car you have, you're going to need a lot of cars.  It does matter to some clients but there's no one car pleases all solution. If you have a very nice luxury vehicle - it can "help" with some clients while others will think you're making too much money - you're not going to make money off them for a lifestyle like that......  etc.. Then you need a pickup for those properties on acreage and those folks that wouldn't be caught dead in a sedan. And a Prius for those with attention on reducing their carbon footprint. Anyway - people do judge us by our material things. The point is if you worry about it you'll get into trouble.  Like others have said a clean, damage free, reliable vehicle is your best all around bet. The only real person that you have to really worry about having an opinion about your car is yourself. If you think it works against you - it certainly will. Get something you enjoy and fits you.

Success attracts success.

However I admire those who drive something that does not flash their wealth, or debt, like Sam Walton and Warren Buffet who always drove old yet reliable vehicles.

It is important to have a clean car but a luxury vehicle is not necessary.

A Honda Accord sedan will meet the needs of most agents.

Yes, if "nice" means a clean reliable car. If your definition of  "nice" means a luxury vehicle, it may help in certain cases such as representing luxury real estate.

There are multiple schools of thought on this.

I've been told by consumers that an inordinately nice/pricey car is a potential turnoff; "Am I gonna be pressured to help make that payment?"
It is a status symbol to have a great ride. But does it fit the market area?

Where I live and work, everyone has trucks. We need them for moving things and driving in dirt. I love my truck and it rides like a luxury car.

So the answer is 'a clean, well running vehicle is best'.

It shocks me sometimes how messy agent vehicles are!

If the definition means well maintained and clean, I vote for yes.

If an agent is driving a 'beater' it suggests the ride is not insured and if seized by the local cops....no loss incurred.

The agent may be driving the '67 classic is fully restored condition. Of course it has few safety features, none of the usb charging ports or cup holders and forget about GPS. An old car in good condition is not a problem.

So, that leaves that agent with the 2019 ride from the Bavarian Motor Works that smell like a nicotine chamber.  Hopefully the consumer decodes this to they are enabling this agent, via excessive compensation, to live a reckless and opulent lifestyle.

You car is an extension of you. A luxury car no, but one that is clean, neat and good looking does help. If you pull up in a clunker, you may not be getting that listing.

Depends who you work with. I'm not sure it is a good idea to arrive in a ''not-nice car'' for a high end listing presentation, at least, I would not.

Otherwise, in other situations, no one cares what you drive as long as you know what you are doing.

First impression is no myth however it must adapt to the situation and flow. High priced products require dress, cars and gadgets plus pomp & circumstance. Lower priced product relies on connection and credibility. Several things however stand out. Cleanliness, promptness & courtesy

15 years ago, I drove an older Toyota Corrola. I was hosting $1+ mil estates and had no trouble leveling with clients. Fast forward, I found out Civic is smaller and able to get around better than other vehicles. Clients even want to try out on my new Civics are equally impressed how much technology has improved. My broker drives a Fiat electric he rarely sells anything under 2M. M  Zukerburg near our neck of the woods often drives his Golf or Acura. Other competing broker does not drive he takes clients inside an airplane and drive home in a Tasla.

Never judge a person by what he wears or drives. In this area we have over 80 billionaires and quarter of a million millionaires they are only ordinary folks to most of us.

It's an extension of your office, so it should be clean...nice is in the ete of the driver. These days people are in your car less so it probably matters less, but it does reflect on you with some clients. Depends on what your area considers "nice" too.
