That started with the auto industry back in the '90s as they say it depleted the ozone layer.
It was very expensive to convert then as a new compressor and o-rings were required.
The newer freon supposedly is less harmful.

Not worried about it because most R-22 systems have either been replaced or will be on their last legs and need to be replaced. Trying to repair an old system is not cost effective anyway. If I had an R-22 system I would be planning for replacement.
Would I buy a house with an R-22 system? Only if I got it cheap enough to replace it ASAP.

I heard about it. I also heard they were banning non-flourescent bulbs. Lucky to date I haven't had to go on the Black Market to find either.

No - I hadn't heard about it here in the Pacific NW. Some, but not too much A/C in residential use here. And I believe there are other refrigerants besides Freon.

My 17YO Trane was reported to be the last generation to use FREON. ALL HVAC since do not use FREON.
I suspect that the 2019 thing is FREON machines can not longer be repaired due to reliance on black market Freon.

exactly why I'm planning to replace my system this year. Last year we did a repair as it was towards the end of summer and we'd almost passed A/C weather. Planning on replacing in the next few weeks. I figure it will certainly help on my power bill also as I'm replacing a 17 year old system that has only had two repairs in all that time. It has served it's purpose well.
