Depending on the floor plan or if the family happens to be rednecks.

I think it's all in how it's designed Cate Griffing . If you open the door and the stool is right there I'd consider that a little weird. What is stranger to me is a bath right off the dining room (which I have seen).

Since the family room is one of the most used rooms by the family, it would be convenient. Also good for guests. It would depend on the floor plan. A door opening into the family room directly would not be attractive.

It's not my first choice but I was in a home a few weeks ago with a half bath right off the dining room which was even more interesting than off a family room. I guess they could come in handy in an "emergency".
Nothing like the sounds and smells of those activities so near guest seated around the table to make for some awkward moments..... or conversation starters depending on the personalities in attendance.

Not necessarily. I prefer to have a small hallway or a transition rather than seeing the door to a bathroom in one of the walls of a living room, though it may be convenient.

ok usually, but depends on floor plan. I remember when health dept in this area wouldn't allow a bathroom next to a kitchen. Now, as long as the bathroom door doesn't open up into a kitchen or dining room, they can be ok. I would add a hallway or some type of screening so door doesn't open up directly into the family room.

I think kitchen and family room are off limits for having doors that open to a bathroom in them.
Bathrooms need to either be in a hallway or a bedroom!

For a Family Room that's in the Lower level it's OK. It's nice to have a bathroom downstairs when the lower levels finished. On the Main floor a nearby bathrooms OK, one directly off the FR, is different.

We have off the laundry area which is connected to the family room. But that's mainly for pool time use and not dripping all over the wood floors.

As long as there is no view directly into the bath, there should be no problem. No one wants to see 'the throne' from the sofa while enjoying 'Breaking Bad." And we all know THAT bathroom sequence.

If the door is open to the FR it's weird.
If you're looking at the TV looking into the bathroom - weird.
What's worse - seeing the bathroom at the end of the kitchen like where a pantry was.
