I once owned a timeshare, and despite the negative perception it worked out quite well for us.
The important thing to understand about time shares is that with most timeshares you are not purchasing real property only a right to occupy.
However the timeshare that I purchased were actually deeded to me. For each week I owned 1/52 of whole. Since the property was owned by individuals we had much greater control over the operation.
I owned it for more than 10 years and eventually sold it a a profit. Almost unheard of in the world of timeshares.
It is like anything else. Before you buy you must know what you are buying.

I don't own one and not interested in owning one. I would think the advatages would be it is cheaper to own, travel to any part of the world, never going to the same place unless you wanted to. Disadvantages would be you can't go anytime you want you have to book your time and only have a certain amount of time to use. Make sure you read the fine print!!!

To me the advantage, more like a benefit, is that it does show that someone made a financial commitment to unplug from their regular routine and go away to spend some quality time whether on their own or with family. Also many allow one to go to several different areas that are in their network so you don't have to go to the same place every year. The main con is that are frequently very difficult to get out of.
In my opinion the advantages have to do with quality of life, the disadvantages are typically financial or money related.

I know of one person who bought a timeshare in the area they lived. The reason was they could use the facilities (gym/pool) anytime. It was cheaper than a gym membership and they could rent their week out. As for me, I would skip the timeshare, pay or the gym and sleep at night!
