I can remember selling only one property with an oil tank in 32 years... and it was empties and sealed to prevent contamination.   I have never heard of any buyer going after the seller for anything 15 years after the fact!!

No.... but we don't use oil tanks in my area.... but it makes sense, oil leaks into the ground remains a responsibility of all previous historical owners, I understand (federal).

What matters is if they remember which house, when they were there, how they got there, who took the away from there and finding if anyone saw them there or if anyone even saw the oil tank.

No, but I will say there's the difference between China's steel and U.S. steel. Average useful life spans are 20 years and 50 years respectively.

We have oil tanks and propane tanks for our heating fuel 

Most oil tanks are above ground on metal stands and visible. 

they used to bury them and that can be a problem down the road

15 years is beyond the realm of reason to expect a seller to be responsible for the home you bought.

It's nice when the break down with a property is way more than 20 minutes after the closing. 15 years and wanting compensation is unrealistic. That leak is part of the joys of home ownership.
