I don't know. Maybe there's some fear involved, especially after two Americans were stabbed in Amsterdam. That being said, I do remember a time many years ago travelling on business in Europe when the dollar was so strong, Americans were flocking there in droves. I was in Paris with my mother for a few days and saw so much "ugly American" behavior I told my mother that I didn't want her to speak with me in English in public. Fortunately, we had a choice of two other languages in which to converse. But in my entire life, that was the only time I didn't want people to know I might be American.... and I've travelled to and lived overseas extensively.

I have Canadian friends who have not lived there in 25 years. They are US citizens. They still say they are Canadian - that is their 'native' country. 

If I were in Spain, I would proudly say I'm from the US.

Many people abroad do not treat Amercians very nice. I travel alot and for me, I will not go to many countries any more. Many people dont feel safe. All the people of the USA should not be labeled by the politics of the day. Not just now, the last 8 years and many years before that. Different presidents, different complaints but also some of the same complaints abroad. Recently on a cruise, i met many from over seas where one commented "they did not know how nice Americans realy are." It made for learning on both our parts as they spoke about their country and i spoke of mine. We shared stories and pictures learning from each other.
