Failure to Communicate. 

Failure to be crystal clear on the contract - what is to be done and by whom, and what is not to be done. 

I need more information. On the surface, I would react by picking up the phone and asking some smart questions to gain an understanding of what they are doing, and why. 

I might then be finding someone else to work with.  If you need a recommendation ... I suggest you contact Peter Mark.

I'm not clear on 'new web' - did he build a new website for you and trying to add information/pages/posts to boost the SEO?

If you're not happy with him, I highly recommend AR's own Peter Mark - he's the best I've ever worked with, bar NONE!

Is your website developer hired to do a brand new site, or just tweak the ones you have?  If the former, they did what you hired them to do.  If the latter, time to fire them.  They will charge you for something you didn't want.

      My brother Joe and his son do SEO for enterprise level companies.  I was visiting him recently...

     Joe got a call from the CEO of a corporation that he represented.  I overhead the call.  "Joe, what the H-ll is going on, we are not even showing on Google Search at all!  Did they de-list us?  This is crititcal!"

     Their developer had done exactly what just happened to you.  He had changed them to different domain servers, to a different CDN, and other changes and re-directs.   That corporation had lost all of their #1 and #2 SERP spots on Google.

      The three things that brother Joe advised him were (1) have that Developer put it back like it was immediately,  (2) call me (Joe) as soon as it is restored, and (3) fire that developer.

    It took some time, but they regained their top spots on the SERPs.

That seems like a major change. Is it because the developer is saving money? Is it providing an advantage/disadvantage to you? Why no warning for this action? Is it a sign of a problem that the developer is experiencing?

Trust should be absolute, in both directions.
In your situation, just that you're not clear on this move would trouble me.

Find out what you can. Maybe it's a Mercury Rx thing and it'll be cleared up.

Or maybe the spell is broken and it's time to move on.

Always have control of your domains at the registrar (Godaddy, Namecheap, Moniker, etc.). Never give control of it over to a developer.

The one who controls the domain DNS, controls everything.

I would look carefully at the small print in my contract and see if this may have been agreed to.  If not, I would question them on why they did it.

Depends on what's in the original contract. There has been some merging of hosting companies going on in recent months, so that might have something to do with it. And one major hosting company was just sold to another major hosting company. Studio Press sites hosted by Synthesis was just sold to WP Engine. Don't rush to judgement. Monitor your site and wait and see.

This will ruin your visibility for a while. If you own the site and pay for the domains go in and change the password and username, as you say this was done without your permission.  I am not certain that switching back will regain your prior visibility. Is this a corporate or broker owned sites? You own SIG?

Never move/touch/change anything without your permission on the front side. I'd can him unless there was a great reason.

I do understand the 'without your permission' violation but in reality their MAY be no harm or foul.

For example, the previous hosting site may have an inadequate security or back up facility, or hosting fees to be unrealistically raised or a new requirement that would compel significant alteration of the website files.  The website developer may have chosen to migrate instead of imposing those costs on you.

The other shoe is this action broke all of your links and in essence your business was removed from they digital world. This is a big foul with great harm.

How would I react? If I was confident the developer 'has my back' then I will stay loyal. If this developer was the 'low cost' bidder, well stuff happens.

Ahh, but if the end result required the TOR browser to access the "NEW WEB", cheer up, the game is afoot.
