Great answer from Alan May who has been on AR long enough to know of which he speaks.

It's points earned.  Rainer means you have a free account where blogs are not visible to Google.  At 500K points you get a free for life account.  Rainmakers are either paid accounts or free for life with posts visible to Google.

It is your total accumulated points! There are a few ways to gain points - the prior responses got into that.

 I thought it differentiated from being a rainmaker....

Those are our beloved and coveted "points".  As a Rainer, you will need 500,000 of them before you become a Rainmaker and the world will get to see what you post. 

It all revolves around the point system they have in place.
