It really depends on the rest of the house, the competition, the market---I look at the "big picture" or least that is my intention.

Every garage is different. It really depends on the garage ... and the home... and the location and price of the home ... you get the idea. It depends. If you don't' believe me, just ask Michael Jacobs

Personally, I would go with fixtures or bulbs like those already in place. If nothing is there already, I'd go with LED tubes. Garage lights aren't on a whole lot (typically) so "efficiency" should be a big concern.
Hope this helps,
Bruce

From the picture, it looks as if your current setup is good as long as they are working well. Flourescents are cheap to operate and shed a lot of light. I don't think you can really improve on it too much without a big investment.

Good lighting in a garage brings more dollars to the table. I don't think the consumer will be that impressed with the lights being LED so just replace the bad ballasts or bulb in the fluorescent lights.

Exact replacement size except in LED version.
Smoked a ballast just a few weeks ago. What an easy conversion it was to install the LED replacement that contained LED strips.
Fluorescent and Formica are both leading disappointments for 'mooney-eyed" buyers.

Maybe just not hang them over the opened garage door...
Other than that, I think you are good with whatever. I would replace them with either keyless fixtures or some nice 48" T5 Flourescent fixtures.

We generally find the old 48 inch fluorescent lights to be problematic.
install good old fashioned light sockets and put compact fluorescent bulbs in them.

So long as what I have works (fluorescent) I keep it. If replacement is needed I would install LED fixtures. I just actually did that in my laundry room when the old flourescent fixture started acting up.

New fixtures with LEDS.
The cost of replacing the entire fixture with LED vs replacing ballasts or buying new flourescents is almost the same (with some good shopping skills ;-)).
The benifit is the LED fixtures will now provide much more light at a much smaller operation cost.
Additional tip, add motion sensor to lights to make it easy and safe when entering the garage.
Hope this helps! :-)

I would use two types of light: LED warm tone 5000K ones. Hyperikon has a nice one that hangs down- put over where you have a work bence and double check the height for a person 6'11 to walk under (avoids banging with a ladder or your fishing rods) Fix the fluorescent ones which are inexpensive to repair. With two different light sources, you will find your man cave much happier. My son worked on a motion/heat sensor one which stays on as long as you are in the garage. I think one motion sensor one would be good, when you walk in it greets
