You have to view the people that come into your business like a card game.  For the most part, you can play every hand.  Sometimes they make up a great hand, but usually, you are dealt a hand you can play.   Every once and a while you are dealt a bad card - then you have the ability to discard it or continue to play the game - every once and a while you will be dealt a Joker - I've occasionally tossed them back into the pile.  Just like you can't change the numbers on a card - you can't change the people.

I take it on a case by case are not going to change a person so not point in trying and I usually have a good sense of whether we will work well together during the initial contact. If it becomes problematic, I refer it out.

Nope on the changes part. Just work with what you have. I remember working with a guy in car financing that used the F word to describe everying both good & bad that happened. Hey, it's the way he was & I was selling him a house not marrying him.

I never try to change anyone. But we change if we get into new environment. Most of my friends try yoga and start paying attention on what they eat. As for clients, we often become friends. I do not push, I educate people and they make decision what is best for them.

I just try to keep everyone focused and moving towards the finish line. Some days it requires a lot of hand holding and empathy. We deal with this every day, but our clients are making life changing decisions and the stress can be overwhelming at times. I have a great deal of patience and try to be as understanding as possible as I guide them through the process.
