God rest the souls of the people who are now gone because of this tragedy. I'm sure not one of them woke up that morning knowing what their fate would be that day. I'm tired of hearing about these shootings, one would wonder how many more times this is going to happen before it's treated like the epidemic it has become.
So I live one town over from Newtown, CT, where the Sandy Hook shooting was. That was a terrible time but I've never seen people pull together more. People's home values weren't affected; their families, their hearts & their minds were.

I have a listing that is 1 block from a local elementary school, and I think residents would feel better knowing that a child is only a 1block run to the house.
We live in scary times and it seems nobody in DC is willing to talk about it. They are more concerned about keeping immigrants out while our own kids are killing each other in school. What is it going to take to get some action on this topic.

I cannot get my mind around a discussion regarding home values in the area of such a tragic and evil act. It is not like a natural disaster, flood, fire, tornado, etc. In life, we rebuild and grow stronger. We have seen it done repeatedly.

I am sorry to hear this was in your neighborhood. It's a tragedy for everyone, but particularly painful when you know the people, the school, the neighborhood.
To answer your question, I do not believe this will affect the property values. It might cause a brief flurry of house sales though.

I was at gym this am and lady said she was going to move to Parkland but not anymore. I don't think it will affect the value of Parkland..

I find it difficult to believe mass shootings affect things, since it is typically an isolated instance. I do believe murderous patterns have a large impact in values though.

I wish I could tell you. Eventually, I would imagine, that things would return to "normal"... as they have in Columbine. But in the short term... it might?? I just don't know.
I am so sorry, and can't imagine how difficult this is for your local community. My heartfelt sympathies.

Personally I would think not. Lea Plotkin & Rubin Wites . Parents like to live near a school, especially an elementary school. Now that may change greatly with the size of the school, I personally would not want to live to close to a big High School just because of the noise and traffic factors. That being said the chance of a 2nd school shooting at the same school would seem remote to me so once again in my opinion I do not think so.

Who is going to keep your imagination in check? I do not think it will & you might want to investigate other areas this has happened. Housing is a totally seperate entity upon itself. Will people probably move? I bet there will be but something like this can happen in their new area too.

No, it won't affect values. The alleged perp is behind bars; that's the end of it. And under Florida Law, you (real estate agents) don't have to disclose that a homicide may have occurred.

I'm hearsick over the events in Parkland and my thoughts and prayers are woefully inadequate, as are the thoughts and prayers of the politicians. I also have a difficult time imagining a Parkland resident prioritizing home values at this time. I don't know how many more children will have to die before sensible gun control is enacted, but the video of the mother of one of the victims begging the President to "DO SOMETHING" will haunt me forever.
I can't speak with any experience to your question, but my guess is that the homoes of the victims (and accused) will be stigmatized for a while.

I doubt it. Just because there was a mass shooting once in a specific location due to a deranged person is no indicator that it will happen again.

Will it affect values? All of those affected will eventually want to put distance between themselves and the location of their great despair.
Based on their pace to process grief, they will sell. The pace is so varied that the market is unlikely to experience a flood of houses for sale. Those seeking to buy will not devalue the location because of the event. Nearly a year or more will have passed.
As a society a response to poorly thought out knee jerk action that does not address the issue will inspire a rush to sedate what we as a society has allowed to happen to our young people.
All of the answers to 'Why do these young people believe writing their final chapter, if a volley of fire and smoke, is a reasonable way?" are ill conceived.
IT IS NOT A GUN OR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE.
It is a societal issues that amplifies the isolation and loneliness of a marginalized group of young men. In the past 40 years how has social re-engineering created the situation where these young men do not know, have not been allowed to discover in their natural way, where they fit within our society?
The answer and the solution are not hard to find. But the same PHD's that created the problem will be called in to solve it. God help us and the young innocent who are both the victim and villain.
We have failed as a society, in our responsibilities to our children. We have allowed others to shackle the parent regarding what the parent MUST do to raise their children to be mature, responsible, creative, loyal, dependable participants in the world they will inherit.
But each voice we will hear has an agenda, And none of the agendas have sufficient vision to affect this population in a positive, meaningful way.
I have witnessed communities bind themselves closely as a family when threatened by tragedy and disaster. When allowed to process their grief, they emerge as those planted by the deep water, with a peace and love that is beyond understanding.
Those who do no process, carry their fragility into every relationship of every kind, and the senseless tragedy claims another victim. It is not what you do today that matters. It is what you do on some insignificant Tuesday a few months from now that your 'Tell me how you are doing?' appeal will be meet with tears and the sobbing body that is worn out from keeping the strong face. Now you can make a difference.

Lea and Rubin,
We once spoke at a middle school that was surrounded by 10 foot fences topped with barbed wire, and two police cars assigned to it. We had to show our ID to get in.
I have no knowledge of your town or your market, and cannot predict the outcome intelligently. A

In my view, no it will not impact property values. Active Shooter threats are rare and have been around a long, long time. I remember stories of schools in the 50s where one student threatened to shoot up the high school, so the students went to the parking lot AND GOT THE SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES OUT OF THEIR TRUCKS and sat watch over the school. The shooter did not attack (and I assume probably crapped his pants when he saw armed resistance).
One off situations like the nightclub attack, movie theater shootings, school shootings are understood to be rare events. Now if you were in Norway where it has become "acceptable" for migrants to gang rape 14 year old (or younger) girls and THE COURTS ALLOW IT, that would be a different topic all together.

First, I'm so sorry about all of this for you/your community. It makes me really sad.
Second, I don't think anyone knows for sure. I would expect no difference long term, but short term, it probably would (e.g. over next 6 months to a year). And, part of that may be due to some of these families wanting to relocate to put these terrible memories behind them.
It seems to me after 9/11 that Manhattan properties went down (but clearly bounced back a few years later). I live 30 minutes from NYC, so we certainly had a lot of people moving here (as well as Long Island, other boroughs and even some to NJ I would guess) and many of them specifically said it was due to 9/11. Also, I seem to remember lots of people who lived here (in the suburbs) getting new jobs so they wouldn't have to commute to the City. Because, you know, NYC is always a target.
But a school is a one off unfortunate random event, and think most people see it that way. I also think that soon there will be other measures taken there which will make it safer.
NY bounces back because it's NY and it will always be attractive. And, it's sometimes more attractive to outsiders.
I did have a job in the City from 2004-2007 and I have to tell you that I would get nervous every day when I was in Grand Central station and couldn't wait for the train to leave. Many just don't want or need that stress.
I still can't look up in Downtown and it's more than 16 years. I'm happy to stay here in the suburbs. I don't need that daily stress.
It's the people that live there and experienced it that will never forget, not the ones moving there.

I am so sorry that this happened, and sorry that it happened in your area.
I can't imagine that anyone would allow that to impact home values and it can happen in any neighbor. Just writing that makes me feel sick. Life was not like that when I was growing up and I don't think I ever imagined a violent act taking place at my school
