I like the one in the picture. Fireplaces are not terribly common here because frankly we don't even use heat that much. In newer homes, they're usually gas log.

A fireplace is one of the best features here in CT. We have an abundance of wood from all the trees out here. Some people like wood burning & some just want to flip a switch. Usually the townhomes want gas because they don't have space to store all the firewood outside.

What is really popular now is reclaimed BARNWOOD or some old knotty wood used to make the mantel. Thick cut & the more distressed the better.

After being on so many home inspections with Jay Markanich , I think anyone using them for heat needs to avail themselves of more information.

In my area, gas fireplaces are the norm.  Mostly decorative.  And more and more home owners are turning off the gas and blocking them from adding a draft in the home.

A little bit of everything around here. Wood, coal, pellet, and gas stoves. masonry fireplaces, gas log conversions, inserts. Construction can be brick, stone, faux stone, thin cut real stone, and occasionaly tile. Some newer homes have zero clearance prefab fireplaces with double or triple wall metal chimneys run up through wood chases. Many people never use fireplaces, or use them on holidays only. Others burn 5-6 cords of wood a winter and use them to heat their homes.

We have a mix around here. Older homes are wood of course. New construction is gas insert without a chimney with the rare exception. If people use fire for heat, it is usually a free-standing wood-burning stove.

When we built our house, we chose to have a hearth and mantle rather than have the fireplace insert just hanging in the wall. I like to have it on a few times a year during the winter. It has come in handy when the power was out but we couldn't turn on the fan so it was more for light.

99% of them are decorative.  I have one neighbor a few blocks over that I'm sure uses their for heating... since it's on every time it's cold out.  Wood burning too.  Love it!

Most fireplaces are gas only, some lame EPA thing.  Wood ones tend to be worth a little more to people from outside of CA.  Out here they mainly need to look nice and keeping with the theme of the house.

Not so common in Central Fl, but when we do see them , most are wood burning albeit seldom used for heating the home.
I had one in our last home and used it for its ambiance during the 1 or 2 weeks of winter that we get.

In New England, nearly everyone loves a good, wood burning fireplace with a gorgeous mantle. Some prefer gas as it's less messy. With wood-burning ones, it is wise to install an insert that actually blows warm air back into the house as opposed to up and out the chimney.

People love their wood fireplaces in NorCal, but air quality is such a problem that in the Bay Area, I'm not sure you an build a house with a wood burning fireplace anymore.  All new construction is natural gas.  A lot of peeps are installing wood inserts into their  old masonry fireplaces which at least helps cut down emissions.

To answer the question, wood fireplaces are frequently on the list of desired items .

masonry in our area is very expensive.... builders use gas inserts and use a direct vent (power vent) so there's no chase.... if there's no gas available, they use a zero clearance wood burning with a chase.... wood burns too hot for a direct vent.... luxury homes will have at least one masonry fireplace plus several zero clearance gas burning....

we use it for a complement to our central heat....not many rely solely on the fireplace system.... our temps are too cold unless the home is small...

I always thought the smell of the different woods, the crackling of the fire and the way it flamed out was the way to go i.e. real wood. However, you cant beat the no muss or fuss instant on gas units and they give out heat too

Different buyers prefer different types of fireplaces! Most new construction homes have gas logs; however, many buyers prefer the older, high-end homes in-town with wood-burning fireplaces.

I've had both and right now, I have two fireplaces and both have gas logs - I am not into lugging firewood into the house anymore! We don't use them for heat unless we have an ice storm and lose power (about every other year). They are mostly used about 10 times a year - more for ambiance!

We're in older and colder part of the country so regular wood burning comes w/ most homes.  I can't imagine anyone using them to heat the house.  That is crazy.

But, I guess it depends what century.  I have worked on some homes from 1700s and some from 1800s where there was a fireplace in each room to heat it up.  But, now those are decorative and not really used.

Here in NH Pellet stoves are red hot as they actually heat and look good and alot less messy and less work than a wood stove. Many homes though have wood stoves, as many lots are large and inexpensive for people to heat their homes with wood and some work. Gas fireplaces are all the rage in newer homes, they look great and throw some heat, but gas can be pricey
