I don't consider sales techniques and negotiating skills the same thing. I have been negotiating for over 45 years and consider myself pretty good at it at this stage of my life. Having negotiated major divestitures and acquisitions in the corporate world, corporate loans in the hundreds of millions, negotiating on a home is at some level "small potatoes."

I don't believe they compare.  Knowing the system is what gets you an advantage.  I would not claim to be a good car negotiator, nor antique buyer. But I know homes in my niche area.

I used to sell cars way back in the 70's, then the gas crunch hit. So, Yes, I love playing the Let's Buy A Car Game. I have saved my friends plenty of $$. Just tell them you will pay invoice and if they say they have to make some $$$ tell them they can keep the monthly spifts and rebates.

I do not negotiate with sales car people. I have my ex husband for that. I am just bored with that kind of negotiation. My ex is great, he can do it for hours. And I do consider myself very good in my work:)

The used car market has slowed considerably making for bargains. Keep an eye here for that market slowing signals to Real Estate

I am the very worst at buying a vehicle.... I always know exactly what I want and I get the bottom line number from my salesman ( I use the same salesman for every BMW I buy) .... and then I buy it...easy peasy for the salesman....

Funny you brought up using our real estate negotiating skills to buy a car. Last year me & my (Realtor) wife cherry-picked a beautiful car. It was out of state but was a great deal. We got a great starting price & worked the salesman down from there. Our last card was, oddly, a credit of several hudred dollars from Yelp (yes, the food site). I do believe this business turns you into a master negotiator. Confidence level -VERY HIGH, Effectiveness- VERY GOOD. Got a super deal.

That is the most annoying thing to do on the planet. I am certainly looking forward to checking out the newer online ordering systems in the next few months. I am prepared for them without a doubt.

I would prefer to totally cut them out of the whole transaction.

Internet online purchase is way lower than haggling with car salesman. That is also the reason I like to bid on line for homes. Yes, buyer has to pay a fee w/o the hassle and abuse.

For me, it would be better prepared and confident, than someone without this experience, John Bear - though I would not short-change Life Experiences either.  I've learned so much in 2+ years as a realtor, and from many different sources in different ways!  I've learned from observing, from 'listening' to what is said and to what is not said, from comments in transactions, and from questioning what I don't understand or the reasoning behind it.  Above all, being fair, honest, and nice (and a smile doesn't hurt!) can get you far . . .  and also doing your homework first, is huge, plus have to add (HA) to not be intimidated by a strong personality!

Sales techniques are different from negotiations. My techniques attract buyers and get them to fall in love. My negotiation skills get my buyer or seller the best deal possible.
