Well I have been there, I moved from The Bay Area to San Diego in 2003 (both CA, both as opposite markets as it can get) and the first thing I did was go back to basics and I assisted a Top Producer year 1 and learned the Market through her and figured out which market I wanted to invest my marketing in, then I got after it. NorCal & SoCal are two different States of mind.

I often get Buyers or Sellers that are buying/selling elsewhere in Florida. I usually refer them out. But when the commission is going to be a lot of money, I go to that town, I join that Board or Association as a secondary Board. Then I spend a few nights in a hotel; I learn the area, the comps, the market, etc. I make the sale, I get the entire co-op fee.
Except for two Boards, every Association in Florida uses the same standard contracts and forms. The Supra eKey will work for almost every board or association (I just need to have it activated for that Board). There is no "learning curve" for the paperwork or lockbox key.

You have to know your market and how to best represent your clients. This is part of our code of ethics for a reason. If it were me, I would learn all the forms for the area, attend all MLS meetings and social opportunities and listen to real estate professionals in the area to learn the quirks of the market.

To be honest at this point in my life I wouldn't start over, I would find something new to do. I don't have the passion to start from scratch. Maybe I would find something within the industry to do that is not specifically helping buyers and sellers since it is what I know. If I was forced to still work with clients I would join a high producing team. -Kasey

I have watched new agents come into our market with no respect for the status quo. They bring the latest marketing technology and apply them and rise to the top of the pack. Nothing remains the same, you need to adapt or get left behind in real estate. As an established agent if you don't pay attention to the trends in the market you will lose ground.

The Internet is an increible equalizer.
Analize what the achieivers are doing and do likewise until you see the horse you are going to ride.
Every effort engaged should not be for today only but create ripples of opportunity for the future.

I just made the move from Illinois to Tennessee. The first thing that I did was to find out who my competitors are and how I can be difference maker. Understand you market and it's weakness and with you knowledge make it better. In other words, stand out from the crowd

Hi Andrew Mooers
Adapt to the marketplace by being a student of it. Then, the basics of Real Estate are the same.

Andrew I've gone through that way back in 93. I moved from a small town to Phoenix and it was quite the journey to figure the game out. One I really remember was we still have 'map books' and I made sure that I mapped out every showing and listing and knew where I was going. I wasn't used to such a huge city - and learning it all was a HUGE challange. But I did it with the help of a really good broker/mentor.

Assuming that I don't have a decent network in the new place... I'd have to tour frequently to learn the market (quickly)... and take other agent's open houses every weekend, and take every floor-time available.
That's how I built my business here... that's how I'd build a business in a new place.
