We didn't have formal "training" but worked under my dad who was the broker/owner.  He was available to help but he always encouraged us to read the contracts, figure it out for ourselves first and then come to him.  So not sink or swim, but not coddled and we figured it all out pretty quickly. -Kasey

I was "given" a mentor who promptly informed me about a six week vacation so it was more sink/swim than any official training program.   Lots of seminars, previewing properties, floor time, door knocking, holding open houses -- I seemed to try it all.

My first broker had 25 years in at that point. It was her office policy to sit the newest agent's desk right next to her own. She went with me on listing appointments, had me shadow her on showings and explained the 'why' of everything that we do. Nowadays, she calls and asks me stuff. I love it!

I joined the family real estate business. I was mentored , coached and made to do what was needed. Some thought i had it easy, but i was given every task no one else wanted. It was a relentless beating of task after task, traveling to every small town, big nh city hitting town halls, tax offices, there was no fax there was Scott will bring it and pick it up. BUT I learned every aspect of real estate by doing. It made me who i am and to appreciate things when i did learn them. I rose up to be a top Lister in NH. My mother was a lot like you Barbara Todaro where she distilled marketing, marketing and more marketing. She beat in me people skills, patience, respect and the lesson to provide the best service possible.

We had two kinds ...one was a 2 week class...and then we were assigned a "mentor"  Mine was not particularly good...had she been, shadowing and  wiriting make believe contracts and  offers, role playing would have been a good thing.  Fast forward, I have neen a mentor and we have a reward system when you do your first X....learning fromboth mistakes and victories...it's time intensive if you do it cottectly but well worth it for the newbie.

Sink or swim. My Broker told me she was a "superb trainer" and rambled on and on about how much training we would do. She didn't train me on anything. She literally spent all her time telling me how bad other agents and agencies were, how I could never trust them, they were crooked, they were liars and cheaters, etc. I left after two months. Three years later I had to file an ethics complaint against her and she immediately turned in her license and disappeared.
