I wish that I had set higher goals, most of us can achieve so much more than we do.

I can't remember that far back anymore. I graduated from high school 51 years ago. Besides, I hated when adults did this to me when I was young and I swore I'd never say this to my grandchildren and I don't.

"...I was unaware the greatest ideas of mankind have not yet been acted upon."
I would continue.." The visitation of inspired thought that brings those ideas, if they are not acted upon, searches for a willing vessel."
"Look, I would challenge, "about at all that is yet to be solved."
"Why are there no COLOR bubbles?
Should not every community have it own solar farm?
Which of you will discover how to decouple gravity?"
Then would ask, "How do you think great ideas are born? By someone seeing a problem and walking towards the solution."
You get the idea.
Open for questions, "This moring did any one of you encounter a problem?"
The DIFFERENCE is some have eyes that 'SEE' while others refuse to see.
Which will you be?"
Of course the 'ice breaker' will be stolen from Richard Weeks

When I was in high school, the most popular show on TV was about a guy from New York City named Archie Bunker. Everybody in America watched that show.
"Archie" and his wife "Edith" sang a theme song at the beginning of each show; they reminisced about how life was better in the past.
"Those Were the Days"
Boy, the way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the Hit Parade.
Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days!
Didn't need no welfare state. Everybody pulled his weight
Gee, our old LaSalle (a car) ran great. Those were the days!
And you knew where you were then! Girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content. Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent. Those were the days!
Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin (five dollar bill).
Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong! Those Were the Days!

". . . I definitely underachieved. But it didn't matter -- I knew I was gonna get the HELL out of Corona, California and pass on living an ordinary life. I went about it my way, which may or may not have worked for anyone else. If I had it to do over, I would have done the same thing. The important thing is to do what YOU feel drawn to -- not necessarily what parents, teachers or peers consider appropriate. Don't fall into analysis paralyis, but calculate the odds of success. Then immerse yourself into it and go for broke! The beautiful thing is that at your age you can easily do over. Even at my age you can!"

" I had no clue about real world finances." I would give them information about the true cost of credit card interest, the value of a high credit score and how to achieve this and the importance of saving for retirement at a very early age. It wouyl dbe great if their parents could also be in attendance.

Follow your dreams - don't let anyone tell you that you can't achieve your dreams and never, I repeat, NEVER, take the 'easy' path!
I remember high school like it was yesterday and I was so busy having 'fun' and 'making the grade' - doing what was expected of me - I didn't pursue my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. I allowed others to tell me what I 'should' do instead. I was 'obedient' and listened to them and not my own goals & dreams.
To clarify, had I followed my dream, my life would most likely not include so much of what I love about it today - I don't regret pursuing my parents' and teachers' goals for me. However, I do often wonder where I would be and what my life would be like, had I pursued my own dreams and goals!
Best of luck with your speech tomorrow, Karen Jones Lewis, MBA, Realtor - you're going to do a wonderful job!

If seniors in high school ...
At this point in the year during my senior year: I made a huge decision regarding my future and what career I would pursue. It was unconventional for the time ... and meant I didn't go away to college as I had initially planned. 42 years later I can tell you it's the best decision I ever made. Don't let anyone tell you that there's only one path to a successful career .. or happiness ...
Best of luck, Karen ... and have fun!

I was filled with curiousity and the desire to learn and grow. I knew that if I wanted to achieve something I had to do something or learn something to get there. The obstacle you will first need to overcome is your fear of failure and not setting and reaching goals:
Fear can be good when you're walking past an alley at night or when you need to check the locks on your doors before you go to bed, but it's not good when you have a goal and you're fearful of obstacles. We often get trapped by our fears, but anyone who has had success has failed before.Queen Latifah

Have fun with your speech! Good luck!

Karen,
I second Nina Hollander 's answer. That intro signaled some stupid long winded speech about how smart the adults are. High school is high school, everyone should enjoy every moment, and then move on. We seem to push kids through hoops instead of letting them enjoy life in that moment.
I have no regrets from high school. A

I really wanted to study abroad in Spain. I did it and also studied abroad in Israel. Being an exchange student or studying abroad is awesome, teaches you so much about the world and other people, cultures and opens your eyes to so much. It's hard to do it once married, kids, career, etc. Do it and do it soon! -Kasey
