I may have just given "the look" and walked away. Some questions do not deserve an answer or reason why, especially with a short sale. The co broke fee is posted in MLS for all to see before they show the home, the time to negotiate it is before they show it, not when they are about to close.

Oh for pete's sake - give it up already I'd be telling them. I not too long ago had an agent call me 6 months after a transaction closed. She says - oh I was the one who referred those folks to you. Huh your name never came up or even the mention of a referral came up once with those folks?  If you really wanted to refer the clients you should have sent me a referral or at the very least called me! Ridiculous.
