It's a bummer, but many do not want the attention, especially during a divorce.

- Don't want to announce that it is for sale to the neighborhood.
- Don't want the nosy neighbors to come and inspect their home.
- Most signs detract from the beauty of the home.

Paul,
We did not want signs in front of our home, and it still sold. Privacy, some people will actually enter a property when no one is home. A

Your house is for sale... why would you want to keep that fact a secret? I don't get that mentality myself.

They don't want all the neighbors to know. I'm assuming they would find out eventually!
Also, they don't want people to drive by and stop and ask them questions.

It has only come up once in all my years, other than HOA issues, and the seller did not want others to know she was selling. We got past that pretty quickly

I prefer a sign; but Bob Crane and Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor, CRS et al gave some good reasons for not wanting a sign.

The high majority of my Sellers do NOT want a sign mainly because supposed buyers seemed to have been raised by wolves! They enter the grounds with no appointment or agent "just to take a peek"!!!

They may not want everyone to know they are selling their home and also for security reasons. The community may not have a gate and can attract unwanted crime.
In today's highly technical world, a sign on the ground is not as important as it was in the past.

I have heard they don't want the neighbors to know they are selling. However, the neighbors should get suspicious when strangers are going in and out of their home all hours. The for sale sign is a great marketing tool and why any seller wouldn't want it does not make sense to me.

Yes, it's a detriment but a privacy choice made by the sellers.

It's rare but it happens so I ask the "why" question and then listen. Signs are important but there can be valid reasons why they aren't used.

Why? The like their privacy. They feel less vulnerable? They embrace the same fear expressed by some AR real estate agent, that is the fear someone will knock on their door.
A detriment? How can it be? Real estate agents repeated say, '90% of buyers are going to come via another agent?"
Are real estate agents (or NAR the origin of most misinformation) misguided in saying things like 90% of buyer come from other agents and 'buyers start their home search on the Internet?'

They don't want a bunch of drive bys and nosy neighbors, and don't want to have to constantly engage in discussions with the curious. There are communities here that don't allow signs, and the houses always sell just as well as houses with signs.

Well it doesn't help! I think it's important. The #1 reason I hear is: "I don't want my neighbors to know". Uhhhh I think they'll know next Sunday when I have my first open house!
I don't get it.

I find many listings without a sign, and those buyers looking in a specific neighborhood are missing this listing. Think it is a detriment.

They don't want their neighbors to know but are naive to think the neighbors are not watching and checking it out on the Internet. They are losing the drive by traffic which isn't smart.

I've had a few - reasons range from not wanting neighbors to know, to not wanting thieves to know to saying it looks really ugly to they don't want a hole in their lawn

It could be that they do not want to advertise to the neighborhood that their home is for sale.

A few over the years haven't had a sign but we managed to sell them anyway. Privacy issues mainly.
5,583,278
signage is a very powerful method of marketing ....it's 24 hour marketing.... they need to have this clearly explained to them....

It's kind of mind boggling as to why they wouldn't want a sign out in the yard if allowed.
2,241,692
If they are on the witness protection program registry, mum's the word. Signs on US highways, high exposure areas you get on your knees and plead to let them to planted for the eyeballs to scan. Dead end sign road with no people, weak resistance to the let's sign it.
1,466,207
Paul S. Henderson, CRS, REALTOR®, Some people have their reasons, but when you limit exposure, you limit potential buyers.
4,800,082
Reasons I've heard is that they don't want their neighbors to know and don't want people coming up to the door trying to see the home.

Multiple reasons why a seller would opt to not have a sign... It would not change my marketing strategies but I would clearly notate in the MLS that there is no sign for the benefit of agents that may find it confusing when arriving at a showing.
7,836,431

It happens here when a seller uses an entry only listing. They often want to avoid paying a selling agent.

Hasn't come up for me. I would expect the homeowner wouldn't want neighbors to know.

I think @Bob Crane said the same I would have! Those would be the main reasons from my perspective.
