Our business cards and the signature at the bottom of my blog are periods. I think it is cleaner and easier to read. But I noticed that within actual blog posts I sometimes inconsistently use dashes. I don't often use parentheses.-Kasey

Fred Griffin - parenthesis around the area code and a dash after 3 digits.
(123) 456-7890.
For a non-USA number, the format will be as per that country.
Example for India (91 being country code) - +91 xxxxx xxxxx.

Good morning Fred,
I prefer the 123-456-7890, it is easier to dial if I forward to my cell number.

Dashes or parentheses (for the phone linkability) - people can't click on phone numbers with dots and make a call just with a click - they have to type in the number instead.

It would be wise to treat published telephone numbers the same as email addresses. Realize that on some media formats, bots are able to identify and scrape the data. Emails, SS# and telephone number all have a specific format that make them targets.
I would recommend the dot and a space for numbers appearing on line. Unfortunately, some templated websites have a preformatted tele field making my recommended number two places too long.
123. 456. 7890
It is highly likely the reader will be calling from a mobile device. This opens the possibilities to alternatives to human readable numbers.
Of course there are those who fear clicking a link whose destination they are unsure of. These folks will fear methods that are not human readable also, although much of what they do on line is cloaked from thier view. Go figure.
