Dorie,

Personally, we are not fond of them in business communications.  Neither one of us really spends time on FB.

Interesting study by researchers in the UK showed positive emojis tend to be more popular or influential on Twitter. The main gist is don't overdo it and know from the onset how your client wants to communicate . Often it's a fun way to add emotional, demonstrative context to things but not a substitute. Once an offer is accepted a smiley emoji an appropriate sign for good news but not when it's been declined. Know your emojis and know your customer!

NO!  In fact, I read something the other day that said that respondents thought that the writer who uses more than one in any given article or comment is thought to be 'immature.'

They don't bother me but, when they do use several in one post, I wonder why they don't just use their words!

Tweets with emojis (and photos or videos) have a better chance of getting Liked or RT'd.

And don't forget those birthday balloons on Twitter...  I use them during my "good morning" Tweets; it gets attention.

I agree with what Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor, CRS had to share in his post. I like using them to help set the tone.

As far as bringing you more attention, it's a fact that posts on social media that include an image or video instead of just plain text get more attention. An emoticon/emoji are a type of image. So, yes, to your question!!!

Just like big words, less is more in publishing.. You can drop one or two in there for emphasis but too many looks unprofessional. Also you have to take into consideration that not everybody's on the same kind of phone and so half of them are going to look like Xs.
