Snow adds a strain on the calculated engineering that can cause collapse if not removed in time and over time

Yes I remember it happening in CO and MN when I lived there and it was a heavy snow year. I just heard about it in Breckenridge CO. A hotel roof collasped due to heavy snow and then started a fire due to a broken gas pipe. Serious stuff can happen. I remember people making sure to shovel roofs too.

Fortunately, not. Then again, I am in the south and we rarely get that much snow.

Wow! I hope that when they replace the roof, they consider slope, and load-bearing capability.

Last year there were problems with ice damming but not roofs collapsing. We don't get much snow in our area.

Yes during blizzard years you have to do it. I guess some people at those companies forgot about it. Flat roofs are the worst.
When I was a kid we had to do it a few times that I remember.

I have never experienced this in a residential property here.. but it could happen in an industrial of commercial proeprety if there is a flat roof and it is an older building that has not been maintained.

Yes, not personally but it happened a number of time back in New England. I worked for a national facilities management company way before real estate in Boston and the company was often hired by various facilities in the area to clear of roofing in very heavy snow because of that concern. And it's a problem for homeowners as well. The weather reports are pretty amazing!

Lynnea,
No in our real estate profession, just earthquakes and high winds that blew the windows out of high rises. Sorry to hear that your area has been affected and that people are pushing snow off their roofs. Take good care. A

Yes, just this winter. My husband called a seller to ask to show the house and the seller said "oh my agent hasn't taken it off the mls yet? Our roof collapsed and we have a big whole in our ceiling and no repairmen are available for a couple of weeks......" I also have a friend who called me asking for short term rentals becaue their friends went on vacation and came home to a completely flooded, unliveable home due to bursted pipes from the cold and storms. Several schools have closed because of burst pipes and flooding. It's been a rough winter around here.

We are seeing that in our ski resorts right now. After 3-5 feet of snow lately, it is too much.

You must be getting some pretty heavy, wet snow. In Colorado if the roof was going collapse, it would have done it by now. We are use to the heavy snow loads.
Although the flat roof on our office building is leaking and was apparently damaged by weather. We have a bucket collecting the water from the inside. It's a miserable sight.

I do remember concern with roofs at some point in the past, but I don't remember the details. Heavy snows can definitely be problematic with some roofs, especially flat ones.

Not here in Sunny Southern California but it has rained 7 of the past 10 days and burn areas are no flooding, freeways are a disaster. I just heard they had 9 feet of snow in Lake Tahoe.

Not this year, but a few years back when we had a lot of snow, there were some issues. I think in Massachusetts where they had more snow, they had more issues.
Also, I think when you have a flat roof, it's way worse. and, if you don't typically get as much snow, the homes may not be constructed as well to handle the weight.
The more common issue here is ice damming. when snow melts and then freezes and melts and freezes (and enters the home). So far so good this year and yesterday was warm and today up to 64 degrees. Weird. I think all the snow is gone. But, unfortunately, it will come back soon.

We have some area flood advisories in effect today and some thunder storms due in this afternoon. We don't get snow, so that hasn't been an issue. Our concerns out here for this storm are:
- Swift water rescue
- Flooded homes
- Debri/mud flows from the burn areas and in general (someone's 20x19 concrete patio broke away yesterday on Laurel Canyon)
- Trees that get uprooted by the rain (4 doors down from me a giant oak tree crashed through a roof, car and stuck itself deep into the concrete driveway a few yars ago. The downside of protected trees).
