John,
It is always good to have choices in lifestyles. It would not be our choice, we like space and room to pace in. We are happy that there is a choice for those who enjoy a very simple lifestyle. A

From what I know about them, these tiny house have a big price per square foot.

They are sure cute, but that is SERIOUS downsizing, and may be just too small for most.

The couple times I've caught the TV show in passing, I've just sat there shaking my head saying WTF? "I can't do without a stove and it's either that or being able to stand up." The smallest one I own is a 1,000sf rental and anything but tiny. I just don't get it.

"New Athens' is the name of the community where a very attractive ' 550 SF tiny house' was built. Lots and lots of publicity and rave reviews.
What are my thoughts? We all have TOO MUCH STUFF and should learn to live with less. Let us live within our needs and leave the wants to those still lost. Use those liberated resources to ease the sufferign of others.
In 'New Athens,' four monthes later, TWO 400 Square foot storage sheds appears in the back yard. That's all I'm saying.

I think these homes are neat, but not in every climate and folks still need to teach themselves to live with less stuff.

I think these make a wonderful alternative for someone who totally wants to downsize and simplify, or for family to live close on the same property, or someone who wants to keep monthly bills low, or... there are lots of reasons these are interesting.
I haven't seen any near me though.

I'm wondering about this myself. A friend of mine is really big on this idea, and her and her husband are going to do this when the kids go off to college. Other then talking with my friend, I haven't had anyone else talk to me about the tiny house movement.

John- I love the idea of them but it would depend. I do have to have space but that said, I've lived in homes where we used only one-half of the space. As I get older, I find that I'm happy with less which frees up my time to do other things. Tiny wouldn't work for me but perhaps "small."

I can see myself living in a lot less space than I have now, but anything under about 1000 square feet would feel too small. The tiny house movement is interesting because a lot of these places are quite pricey!

Haven't seen the whole thing being welcomed anywhere as of yet. The lots in the regular subdivisions here would be pretty small for this.
The tiny portable homes are around 40K which is a total joke. At that price it would be more fun to live in your van or SUV.

It is NOT going over big here John DL Arendsen , unless you are talking about Ice Fishing Houses. I heard an ad yesterday for ice houses as low as $15,000. I couldn't believe it, that's $2,000. more than I paid for my 1st house.

wow...450sf FOR home!!! my last home had a formal living room that size....I suppose that would be in demand if one was in an area where there was no land and prices were well over a million to start!!

We have large new soar ceiling 2300sf home on a tiny lot of 2400 sf lot.
The gla has be comfortable larger than what our parents have lived. Lot size can be sacrificed.
Many parcels in places like NYC have been rezoned to have another home in between or in the back. I have blogged 350, 450, 650 sf gla homes but it is like live inside a submarine.

It's not for me right now but it certainly can work for others who don't want the spce or cannot mange it personally or financially. The challenge may be finding places to build them especially given the cost of land.
