good question.... I knew this one, but not as "kite" winder..... two of the winders together have the shape of a "kite"...my builders always used a platform to create the angle to the last section of stairs... was more formal and less dangerous....

It's one of those cute 8 year olds with a huge messy ball of string he's winding up in order to run like crazy and let his kite get grabbed by the wind on a blustery March day.
