If it opens when I reach for it it is right handed. If I smash my face, it was left handed. 

For me - with the door opening away from you rather than opening towards you - if the door swings to the left - it's a left handed door. If the door swings to the right it's a right handed door. Which I believe matches your description.

Which ever hand you use to open it, would've been my guess.

If I open it with my left hand ... it is a left handed door. The opposite is true for a right handed door. 

My husband sold doors for years and said put your butt against the butt hinge and reach for the door handle with the hand closest to it. That tells you the hand.

Well now I know.

On the refrigerator door we came up with a reversible design. It saved the logistics of stocking leftie and rightie. 

My thought was the same as Dan Pittsenbarger's as far as determining this. Different appraoch, same answer!

This site has a pretty good explanation for both interior and exterior doors and also includes some things to watch for, e.g. when ordering locksets and the lockset site has a totally different description for "handing" a door.

It always goes back to location, right?  Or position.  In the case of doors, I believe it has to do with location/position of the hinges.
