Actually, I had one in a multi-story townhouse, it was great for transporting groceries from the first level garage to the kitchen on the fourth floor.  

Believe me, I know... the first house we lived in when we moved to NYC from Germany in 1952 had a dumbwaiter (house built in 19th century). The last coop my mother owned in NYC, which was built in the 1890's had no elevators and a dumbwaiter to each apartment to pick up trash.

I love those! My granny had one in her home and I fit in it when I was a kid. Hours of fun!

I know but I am not telling.  The local museum has a dumbwaiter as the building was built by one of the early settlers in Erie, a business man with lots of money & servants.

Dumbwaiters are awesome... unlike dumb people!

A dumbwaiter is a small lift in a wall that can go between floors and carry food or other items - I've seen them in old-old, large homes back East, and they connected to a downstairs kitchen Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers.

I sold a house that was built in 1949 that had one.

It's any waiter that can't get my order right!  I said well done, not raw!!

On a serious note, it's an often manually operated "mini elevator" used to transport food and drink from a kitchen upstairs to an eating area, so servants don't have to walk through your home carrying food.

Hi Tony & Suzanne - My grandmother had a dumbwaiter. My brother and I would ride it when no one was looking.

I have been to a few restaurants with these.

And been a few homes with them too.

One screws up your order, the other delivers stuff up and down between the floors.

The guy who takes your order at a restaurant, brings out the wrong food, and forgets all of the extra info you provided with your order.  A dumb waiter indeed

The guy that served us last night brought my wife a Cosmopolitan instead of what she ordered; a Champagne Cocktail...that was our dumb waiter.
