See what Ken Jones said. As for the record keeping, I've got my husband. I send him receipts and he takes care of the rest.

An odometer and good mind for deducting non-business mileage.

Tom Bailey - looks like Ken Jones has a difficult experience.
I had submitted my excel spreadsheet when this happened to me - and fortunately, that was the end of it! It worked.
MileIQ is a good app. TaxMileage, TripLog etc are also available.

MileIQ is the only one I am aware of though there have to be more. It has a monthly fee associated with it.

I don't find it to be that important myself - and apps, IMO are not the best method just use a log in your car and get in the habit of writing it down
Really though, I would not sweat it

Tom Bailey I keep my mileage documented on a paper trip ticket and my expenses records on Quickbooks. MileageIQ is advertising pretty heavily in my area.

I'm old school. I just use the little mileage book purchased from Office Depot.

I have a small spiral notebook in my car and keep track of the miles driven. My expenses are kept in excel by category.

Keep your business and personal life separate, business vehicle, business checkbook, business office, etc.

My app is a small calander in my car. I write down my milage down when I leave and when I get home

Pen and Paper works well for me. I create my own template for monthly mileage logs.

Tom, my app is a pad of paper, a pen and the trustworthy trip-meter. A digital voice recorder is sometimes used then transposed to the property file.

You got some good advice from Ken Jones, although it may not be practical to maintain a separate car for business or differentiate business travel from personal in case of real estate (e.g. stopping to buy groceries on way back from showing?). Good luck. Separate credit card is a good idea, but may have similar issues in terms of how the car is used. Best advice - be conservative.

Tom, as reported by Ken Jones , the IRS wants 3rd party data to validate your mileage. Your choice will be a system requiring intervention from you at every stop, or a passive system that you turn on at the start of the day, and it does the rest. The one I like is MileZip. I won't tell you what else is behind the curtain, but if you are serious, you find out for yourself.
PS: Milezip uses the GPS of your cell phone to establish business intersects/opportunities through an easy to use app.
