WOW -  fun to see how problems in one area are huge bonuses in another.   South facing windows here are a big plus!

An electronic shade that you close from 3 until the sun sets.  I don't think, outside of tinted windows, that you can still have a view and keep the heat out.

Brandy, the 3M product is fantastic and I'm sure you'll find companies in our area who offer that service.  It protects the floors, furniture and also keeps your electric bill within reason!  Good luck!

We do not have windows facing that direction.  With the most expensive triple paned windows it is 1/5th as efficient to insulate the bldg.   Plantation wooden shutters do provide some insulation as good a dual pane and very popular in Vegas and SW. 

I'm sure you have already used big G to find out about window tinting.

As you discovered, interior adaptations do not eliminate the heat.

Exterior adaptations do.

Make sure the window tinting is IR and UV effective. Here in Florida, we also want impact protection. 3M seems to be the most dominate provider of such film.

I've heard and seen good things about window tinting, plus it'll give you some privacy.  Right now, it doesn't look like you have any.  I'd skip the awning, it won't cover all the windows and I don't think it'll look good on the house.  Maybe some blind or shutters on the OUTSIDE of the windows, to prevent the heat from coming in. 

I have had clients buy homes with those gorgeous windows, and they had tinting put on, and electronic blinds.   They said it helped.

Depending on the movement of the sun, windows glazing on the southern facing side of the building is recomnended  to warm a building during the winter.  In order to stay cool in the summer, passive solar houses rely on shading or overhang system of  to keep the building cool. doing that can reduce your heating and cooling costs by 85% on the average.

I would recommend Grommet style Thermal Curtains.  They will keep out the heat and tuck away nicely for the rest of the day.

We are not window treatment pros. You might select your options, weigh appearance versus energy efficiency vs. cost. Bingo, you will have your answer!

It depends on what the owner of the window wants to accomplish.

Some clients of mine had a film put on their windows to reduce heat.

I like free heat, but if you don't than perhaps a ventilation system to move that heat back out would help.

Those window coverings (not shades nor blinds) that coat the outside of the window only, where you can see out, but others cannot see in, and it does cut down on the heat/cold Brandy Formanek.  I see them here in our community.

I have been using outdoor inexpensive see through blinds purchased at Costco when added to the dual pane windows with a slight tint plus inside blinds drawn help deter the heat some but not all....

I have just had some Southern windows tinted and for residential purposes we used the 3M 71% product. The 90% product had a mirror effect on the outside and I didn't want that look on my house so settled on less sun blockage. The windows only get the intense sun for about an hour in the morning. This tinting has helped but did not eliminate the need for a shade or awning if it becomes too irritating. Right now we are on hold.
