I'm there, CALI baby! Like Jeff Dowler I've lived through 3 major fires and 2 major earthquakes. None happen regularly so I'll take them over the regular flooding, snow storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and volcanoes. But then again, I do live in America's Finest City...OH!

I suppose flooding.  We have many canyons in our area, resulting inheavy run-off and flooding during heavy rains.  I've always made sure I live in an area (and elevated) that is not prone to those run-offs.  You have NO control over earthquakes, tornadoes or hurricanes.

Living in Florida, hurricanes are a real possibility - watching "Matthew" as we speak although it is not projected to reach my area.  At least with hurricanes we have plenty of warning and can prepare and get out of the way if needed. I don't think that can be said of earthquakes or tornadoes.

I wouldn't live near the banks of rivers that flood, near the beach that get impacted by hurricane or tidal waves.  I live in California and we live in fear of earthquake and fires.  The best locations have the most natural disasters.  I'll stay put for now but we haven't had the big one in over 20 years and our are gets them every 20 years or so.

Hurricanes! And we evacuated this evening to a nice hotel on the mainland since we live on a barrier island (Cocoa Beach) and Matthew is expected to come too close to our coast for comfort. We started preparing to leave Monday night and are relaxing while waiting for the 11pm update on the Weather Channel.

Word is Jim Cantore will be in Melbourne, about 20 miles south of Cocoa Beach...never a good sign.

You are basically asking, 'If you gotta go, how do you want to go out of this life?"

Since leaping from a tall building wearing a 'Sail Suit' is not on the list, the most 'sensational' I see on the list is a quake.  But I so dislike California I will opt for 'going out' in a confrontation with a big ole Florida gator. Maybe one sent airborne by a Cat 5. However,  with a Cat 5, no one will be around to witness the 'outing.'

Silicon Valley-between 2 fires, one started 2.5 month ago near Big Sur 75% contained; the other is Loma Prieta 640% contained.

Loma Prieta had a jolt 3.2 yesterday. In 1989 it was so noticeable that Cypress Bay Bridge miles away collapsed.

Does the earthquake or fire affect real estate? In PA it is $1500-2000/sf,  Median home price is over 1M. Closer to city it is like $1.4M-1.9M for an old small tract homes.

Have not heard of flooding, or homes falling into ocean as water waves do erode earthbank.
