A Lally column is what you install real quick when you finally take out the old parlour walls to renovate your old house and realize that the bedrooms above are now sagging a little........ (oops---I guess that was a load-bearing wall!)

I just have to say that it sounds just a little bit "naughty."

I see them put in garages quite often where there is a large span so wive's can drive into them. 

They are the tall round poles like the ones in Sam Shueh's comment, that they wanted to put in my basement when I wanted to use a boulder (for my cocktail table) weighing 2 tons.  I settled for a faux rock instead!

This is in the basement. It covers up with a cushion to sit on a support wooden box. Flora helped with it.
