Because in many areas you are "forced" to join in order to be able to access your MLS. Frankly, I DO NOT see why the two should be linked, don't see any benefit.

Your broker will require it and without joining you will not be able to complete with the other REALTORS®.

 Condtion for transactions. The other choice is hang the license on the wall til it expires.

For me, it's required.  I'm sure that may be the case in Utah too.  

You may not have an option if you want access to your MLS.

In CA, no board, no MLS. So, I'd say that's your #1 reason.

The company you want to join may make it mandatory. I would not consider not being a Realtor and not having the tools of the business available to me.

Why not? Part of being an agent and being among like minded people in my opinion. Real estate is a team sport.

Because you have no choice.

We can't have agents learning how to benefit from the 'dark-sides' theft and misrepresentation of REALTOR intellectual property. So, brokers will REQUIRE board membership to retain control.
