I was at my desk in my office, working...and my phone rang with my daughter, Tammy, crying hysterically.... at the time her husband, Ryan, had just started his job as a Deputy Sheriff in our county in MA.... but all of Ryan's family was in Long Island, NY....and many worked everyday in Manhattan.... I went home; Ryan, Tammy and the children were all living at my house....Ryan gathered his children from school asap... we all met at home and were glued to the TV, while Ryan called each and every family member to see that each was safe and not in the city....

I was actually at our office doing pre-call practicing when someone said there was a problem with a plane & a large building. We turned on our office TV system to see the whole thing unfold.
I remember vividly thinking who would do this? Then when the 2nd plane hit I said someone is at war with us now.
I was actually so shocked that I was numb & didn't know what to do so I went home. One of my office mates was afraid for her kids in school so she left in a hurry to find all 3 of them.

Washington, DC. I had just been appointed Executive Director of the Washington Project for the Arts\Corcoran, the oldest artist organization in DC. I was scheduled to meet a friend/board member in Crystal City at 9am to review new logo and identity options but overslept (rare for me).
Back then I was a serious news junkie and slept with the tv on. I woke up running around getting ready to leave as they were reporting that a plane had hit one of the Towers. I watched in disbelief, wondering how this accident could have happened. I didn't call Andres to tell him I was running late; he's always a little tardy and figured I could call him from the car on the short drive from my house in Arlington, VA. (I've had a cell phone for twenty years) As I was about half a mile from the Pentagon I called Andres and said I was on my way, to which he shouted, "Don't come here! A plane just hit the Pentagon!!!" I immediately looked to my left off the overpass towards the Pentagon and saw a tiny puff of black smoke eminating from the building. He told me to take another route that took me South of Crystal City and the back way in towards his house; no more plans to head to his office nearby. As I changed directions to head South towards 395 I saw three cars that had just pulled over and drivers getting out to assess the damage to their cars - either someone slammed on their brakes causing the other cars to pile into each other from the impact of the plane in the distance hitting the Pentagon or force of that impact blew out their windows. Andres later told me he was standing in front of the windows of his house and he could feel the sucking in of the windows either before or after the impact.
I drove to his house and stayed there all day glued to CNN. Andres' partner had eventually come home and we decided we needed to go to the store to buy food and go to the bank to get cash. Michael thought that the real threat was against the financial center in NYC and that if we lost use of our 'plastic' it would cripple the US economy. We decided we all needed to get as much cash as possible. My bank branch was in Crystal City so we walked over - the bank manager was a friend and agreed to cash a very big check for my friend despite him not doing business with them.
My assistant called me - she was at the Corcoran museum at the office and she asked what she should do, she was scared. Back then there was no evacuation plan for this sort of emergency and there was a rumor that the White House was the next target. I told her to go home immediately.
As Andres and I walked to the bank, I remember how quiet the streets were despite the horrible bumper to bumper traffic. Everyone remained so calm, no one was rattled no horns at all! Maybe that's the military in folks. Another friend left his car in Georgetown and walked 5 miles to join us.
I called my Mother who worked at the Air & Space Museum to see if she was ok and she said yes, she was headed home. I think I stayed in Crystal City till about 7pm and then drove home on desolate streets.

I was at work and then trying to get in touch w/ my dad who had an out of office mtg. His office was in midtown, and I was afraid he had a downtown mtg, but thankfully he didn't.
The phone lines in our area were mostly down. So, it took hours before anyone reached him. I think it took him hours and hours to get home as they shut the trains down.
Fighter planes flew over head.
Very scary.
I could see the clouds of debris from my apartment for well over a week.

It was a Tuesday morning and I was listening to the radio and heard the news. I admit to thinking it was some sort of weird "War of the Worlds" kinda thing at first. The rest of the day was eerily "regular".

San Mateo, CA at home, a little past 6am I believe. I was laying in bed watching the news with a cup of coffee, Ailina was getting ready for work. I was watching a reporter say a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center and no sooner did he say that when a second plane smashed into the tower live on the air. I started screaming to Ailina to get in here, which she did reluctantly as I was interrupting her morning routine. Suffice to say, we never left the house that day, we watched the news all day. I wouldn't let her go to work because she worked for an international tech start-up. But, that night we went and celebrated one of my best friend's birthdays, which was tough, but needed.

I was driving down Washington Road on my way to the office when the first tower was hit. When I arrived at the office I informed my staff and we turned on the TV in the Conference Room and we all watched in horror as the second plane flew into the second tower. At that point I said "the US has been attacked" -- A few of us stayed at the office and were glued to the news ... the phones went quiet for almost two weeks.

That is the day that I quit my corporate job. I decided to put my kid's need first. I can still remember the fear and uncertainty of having to drop off my kindergarten on his first day of school after all that was happening to our country. Our financial building was on lock down and I said...enough is enough. My kid's safety should be my priority.

Looking out the window of a beautiful condo I'd just listed on Connecticut Avenue (a main drag) at all of the people walking home. My client worked for a law firm with its New York office at one of the Twin Towers. Luckily, the most of the staff came to work after 10-:00 am.

Everyone remembers where they were. We weren't real estate agents yet. I was in my classroom with brand new 7th graders and had to maintain my game face for the whole day. I snuck into an empty room while another teacher watched my class so I could check in with Wayne and the kids. We could see the smoke from NJ for days.

Sleeping (I'm in California and was in college at the time). I was awakened by an unusual amount of dogs barking (thought it was an earthquake warning, when you live out here and been through a few earthquakes that makes total sense). Parents came in and told come see the TV. I knew instantly it was Al Qaeda and Bin Laden (I had just done a research project that predicted this exact event by those people five months prior).
I contacted a few friends, then went to school. Spanish 101 or 102 was my first class of the day. Spent most of it with an earpiece in to a radio listening to what was going on. Had to explain to my classmates that this was the "where were you when..." historical event for our generation (even though most in the class were in 1st or 2nd grade when the Challenger went up).
I spent the next week freaked out and expecting "The Men in Black" to show up because of my research project (presented in a class at school). Topic was Cyber Terrorism and how it could be combined with traditional terrorist tactics. Rand Corp. had a research paper on a C-130 being flown into a military air traffic control tower, to drive people to news sites which were infected with banking trojans, to then steal money to finance terrorist operations. I took that and extrapolated that if Al-Qaeda (the biggest player attacking on US soil at the time) were to conduct such an attack it would be against the World Trade Center, since they had tried and failed to take it down in 91(?) with the van bomb in the parking garage and those groups keep attacking until the target is destroyed. Needless to say, I stayed off of CNN.com that day!
